  • Cardano and Petrobras have developed blockchain applications focused on sustainable aviation fuel and Petrobras’ renewable Diesel R.
  • The SAF project links fuel certificates with digital records to improve traceability and reduce the risk of double counting.
  • A proposed Diesel R system would track fuel data across production, transport and use while supporting Scope 3 emissions reporting.
  • ADA rose 3.34% over 24 hours following the announcement, although trading volume remains below levels seen in 2025 and 2022.

Cardano is getting some new use cases. In a press release dated 30 September, the Cardano Foundation said it is pushing into public digital infrastructure through a partnership with Brazilian energy giant Petrobras.

Specifically, the project will target Brazil’s oil and gas market, which is forecast to reach US$28.82 billion (AU$41.47 billion) by 2031. The Zug-based foundation said “the teams have delivered two blockchain applications focused on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Diesel R, Petrobras’ brand of renewable fuel”.

What’s Behind the Project?

For SAF, Petrobras, PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs and the Cardano Foundation are using blockchain to link fuel certificates with digital records of their environmental benefits. A Book-and-Claim model allows airlines, companies and passengers to claim those benefits separately from the physical fuel, while Cardano tracks their origin and helps prevent double counting.

Passengers can also receive certificates showing their journey and CS-SAF allocation.

For Petrobras’ Diesel R, a proposed Cardano-based system would track data across production, transport and use, creating a clearer fuel history and improving the auditability of Scope 3 emissions reporting.

Rafael Fraga, LATAM business development lead at the Cardano Foundation, said “the energy transition will depend as much on trust as it does on new fuels”.

He added that more complex value chains are increasing the need for environmental data to be traceable and verifiable.

Public blockchain gives us the opportunity to make that trust part of the system by design, providing industries with a shared, verifiable foundation for the next generation of energy markets.

However, trading activity remains well below levels seen in 2025 and 2022, with current 24-hour volume at US$543.06 million (AU$781.98 million).

ADA reached an all-time high of US$3.10 (AU$4.46) on 2 September 2021. The coin has slipped to 14th by market capitalisation, with a current market cap of US$9.2 billion (AU$13.24 billion).
