TLDR

  • XRP Ledger developers released the ninth Smart Escrow Devnet as testing moves closer to launch.
  • The latest version shifts WebAssembly integration from C++ to Rust for cleaner execution and control.
  • Developers reported a 30%–50% performance improvement for each host function call.
  • Smart Escrow will allow programmable conditions before locked XRP or other assets can be released.
  • Possible uses include compliance checks, notary approvals, auctions, real estate deals, and oracle-based transactions.

The XRP Ledger has moved closer to programmable escrow after developers launched the ninth Smart Escrow Devnet release. RippleX senior software engineer Mayukha Vadari called the update a major step toward launch. Developers still need to review and test before wider use. Testers must update configurations before using the new Devnet.

The release changes the Smart Escrow framework. Developers moved the WebAssembly virtual machine integration from C++ to Rust. The new design gives the system one entry point for gas accounting, error handling, and checks. Vadari said the change improved performance by 30% to 50% for each host function call.

XRP Ledger Gets Technical Changes

Developers also renamed host functions, ledger fields, transaction result codes, and the execution entry point. The team chose names that better match production use. The work comes as the XRPL Batch upgrade remains another network development that validators and operators continue to track.

Standard XRPL escrow can lock funds until a set time or a cryptographic condition allows release. Smart Escrow adds a small WebAssembly program that checks extra conditions before funds move. This gives developers a way to create conditional transactions without changing the basic escrow process.

Smart Escrow Expands Release Conditions

The XLS-100 proposal describes Smart Escrows as an early layer of programmability for the XRP Ledger. A program could require notary approval, a compliance check, or outside data before releasing funds. Developers could also connect an oracle when an escrow needs verified information from outside the ledger.

The update arrives while other XRP ecosystem projects continue to develop. Recent coverage of the Evernorth XRP treasury plan points to activity around XRP-related infrastructure and institutional products. Smart Escrow focuses on transaction rules rather than market access.

Testing Continues Before Launch

Possible uses include real estate payments, auctions, compliance holds, and peer-to-peer deals with set conditions. Recent XRP market activity also remains in focus during ongoing network upgrades. Smart Escrow could support arrangements where several requirements must match before a transfer completes. Developers test these functions before a production rollout.

For Smart Escrow, the focus stays on continued software review, Devnet testing, and the stability of the new Rust-based design. Developers have not announced a mainnet launch date, so the feature remains in testing while the framework moves toward release.
