XRP Gains a Role in Funding Exploit Recovery

Depositors in selected Sentora products now inherit safeguards against defined failures without separately purchasing a policy, Firelight announced Oct. 6. Sentora, a platform designing and managing decentralized finance investments, initially enabled the service on its USD Protected Vault and Protected RWA Vaults. These products pool funds across strategies; RWA stands for real-world assets represented on a blockchain.

The newly activated safeguards on Sentora’s covered products operate within preset limits. Firelight cited a 39% annual increase in curated vault assets and a near-tripling of oracle attacks, which manipulate data used by lending applications, this year. It put capital backing onchain cover at just 0.14% of the $88.3 billion locked in DeFi, highlighting a gap between deployment and available loss funding.

Connor Sullivan, chief strategy officer at Firelight, said:

“As more capital moves onchain, protection needs to be as transparent and scalable as the markets it supports.”

The backing comes from FXRP, a representation of XRP on Flare, a blockchain supporting smart contracts, or programs that execute predefined rules. Through Flare Smart Accounts, a supported XRP Ledger wallet can authorize the creation and deposit of FXRP in one flow. Participants receive stXRP, a receipt for the funds they commit to backing claims, while the pooled holdings sit outside the applications receiving cover.

XRP Returns Depend on Fees and Loss Exposure

Participating XRP holders earn a share of protocol rewards funded by fees that operators pay to enable the service. Those FXRP-denominated distributions stream into staking positions and compound automatically. Contributions and accumulated earnings remain subject to slashing, meaning the system can reduce them following a confirmed covered event. Participants retain this exposure until they fully exit the withdrawal queue.

That operating model advances the phased rollout described when Firelight introduced its XRP staking system in December 2025. Staking here means committing funds to support the payout mechanism. The earlier stage established deposits and transferable receipt tokens ahead of activating coverage; the current operation connects that liquidity with live obligations rather than securing the XRP Ledger.

Participation had already reached more than 50 million XRP staked in March, a historical milestone preceding the latest activation. Withdrawal timing now reflects the protocol’s 30-day coverage periods. Firelight pays vault operators, and each vault’s terms govern any payout that reaches affected depositors. This protocol-based arrangement is distinct from traditional insurance.

Access to related investment services is also expanding through Doppler, which provides XRP-focused investment services. Its integration with Flare, outlined Oct. 3, is designed to add offerings from outside providers.

Five Firms Check Claims Before Funds Move

Eligible incidents and their parameters are recorded in advance, covering software exploits, oracle failures affecting external data feeds, and attacks on governance systems that control decisions. Other triggers include mechanism failures causing unpaid borrowing obligations, known as bad debt, or depegs, when tokens lose their target values. Redemption failures also qualify under published criteria.

These exposures arise within decentralized finance, where blockchain software executes transactions and manages investments. Firelight’s security partner, Zeroshadow, publishes an exploit report. The protocol’s independent Risk Consortium, comprising Hypernative, Native, Credora, GFX Labs, and Cyfrin, checks published criteria and confirms damage before payment. Veda and Upshift, infrastructure providers for pooled strategies, integrate the service so managers can elect it.

Sentora incubated Firelight and reported $2.8 billion in aggregate vault value across more than 300 strategies in the announcement. Openzeppelin audited the project, which also uses Immunefi’s public bug bounty to identify vulnerabilities. Separately, an $8 million funding round led by Gumi Cryptos Capital included Tribe Capital and Maven 11.
