How Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX Empire Collapsed

FTX was once one of the best-known cryptocurrency exchanges. Its rapid rise helped establish Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) as one of the industry’s most prominent figures. That reputation collapsed in November 2022, when FTX failed, leaving customers unable to access their funds. The exchange went from a roughly $32 billion valuation to bankruptcy in about a week.

Investigations later showed that customer deposits had been funneled to Alameda Research, which used them for risky bets, venture investments, real estate, and political donations. The misuse left a shortfall of around $8 billion.

Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas in December 2022, convicted of fraud and conspiracy in 2023, and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2024. Ellison pleaded guilty to criminal charges and cooperated with prosecutors.

Why the FTX Story Still Resonates

The FTX failure also hit lenders and funds, including BlockFi and Genesis, and contributed to the 2022-23 market downturn. It exposed how interconnected and leveraged the industry had become.

FTX had built an image of legitimacy through Super Bowl ads, celebrity endorsements, arena naming rights, and heavy lobbying in Washington. Bankman-Fried cultivated a quirky, altruistic persona, which made the fall more dramatic.

The collapse strengthened the case for tighter exchange oversight and is still cited in US market-structure debates.

Traditional finance firms, VCs, and large investors have since placed greater weight on due diligence, counterparty risk, and governance. Even backers such as Sequoia and Temasek missed basic red flags.

Why Netflix’s FTX Drama Matters to Crypto

The Altruists brings the FTX collapse back to a mainstream audience, keeping custody risk and exchange transparency in public view. The failure remains a reference point in discussions on crypto regulation and counterparty risk.
