Can TRON go quantum resistant safely? Expert calls for rigorous reviews

TRON [TRX] could bring its quantum-resistant security layer to mainnet “any time,” according to founder Justin Sun.

In an X post, Sun reiterated the chain’s readiness ahead of Q-Day, when quantum computers could threaten existing cryptographic protections.

We’re closely tracking progress in quantum computing and AI, and we’re ready to bring quantum resistance to mainnet at any time.

The update comes following this week’s revelation of AI advances and breakthroughs in mathematical tasks. It raised fresh fears that even the current elliptic curve cryptography that underpins parts of the current blockchain security layer could be cracked by AI.

As such, the quantum computers that were the initial security fear but were still years or decades away have been replaced by AI as an immediate threat. To address these double security threats, experts proposed ‘bunker mode’ to reduce address reuse and limit public key exposure.

For its part, Starknet is considering switching from Ethereum [ETH] to a full standalone L1 to fast-track its post-quantum security.

TRON is another top project that has announced a plan to accelerate its post-quantum push.

Tron races to secure $100B in assets, but…

In April, TRON [TRX] first announced its post-quantum (PQ) upgrade plan following Google’s warning that the industry should take proactive steps to upgrade.

Its first testnet for the same, dubbed Nile, went live in July. It opted for the Falcon-512 cryptographic signature, a lattice post-quantum system.

It’s unclear whether the project has found a solution to larger data sizes and computation overhead associated with some of the proposed PQ systems being explored by blockchains. Beyond this, there is also potential friction in migrating old addresses to the new system.

But even before rolling out the PQ on the mainnet, other experts such as Ivan Miskovic, founder of Quantum Foundation, urged Sun to conduct internal and external reviews on the upgrade.

Rigorous internal testing and independent external reviews by global experts are the key to protecting users and partners assets on TRON.

How much value could TRON’s upgrade protect?

TRON is one of the dominant networks in stablecoin supply, currently holding $95B in assets. On its DeFi front, it has a TVL (total value locked) of $5B, roughly translating to about $100B in assets.

But even if it crosses the PQ milestone this quarter, it won’t be the first to do so. There are some chains such as Quantus that were developed quantum-resistant by default.

That said, it’s great seeing Tron lead the industry to proactively address the AI-quantum double security threat.

Final Summary

  • TRON founder said they could push post-quantum resistance to mainnet ‘any time’
  • However, an expert called for rigorous internal and external reviews before mainnet debut
