What 70 and 30 Really Mean

Bitcoin’s RSI stood at 54.3 points on October 11, 2026, with a daily close of $83,675.60. The reading sits in the middle of the scale, and that is exactly why it makes a good moment to explain the indicator properly: at this level it says nothing at all. Traders who use the RSI as a signal generator wait for the edges, for readings above 70 or below 30. How often those actually occur, and what really happened to the price afterwards, we calculated ourselves for this piece from 705 daily closing prices.

The finding first, because it contradicts the common reading: in the not quite two years between November 6, 2024 and October 11, 2026, the Bitcoin RSI was above 70 on 50 days, in what is called overbought territory. Fourteen days later the price stood higher than on the signal day in 32 of those 50 cases, so in 64 percent. “Overbought” was no sell signal over this stretch; it was the better side of the two. Every tool that calculates such indicators ready-made is listed in our overview of crypto analytics platforms.

Bitcoin RSI today: 54.3 points on October 11, 2026

The last completed trading day in our series is October 11, 2026, with a close of $83,675.60. The 14-day RSI stood at 54.3 points that day, at 51.5 the day before and at 46.9 on October 8. The indicator has worked its way back from the lower half into the middle, after the price brushed the upper threshold briefly on October 4 at $86,510.40 with an RSI of 68.6 and then slipped back to $81,683.80 by October 8.

What the relative strength index actually measures

The relative strength index is a momentum indicator: it sets the average price gains of a period against the average price losses of the same period and puts the result on a scale from 0 to 100. It was developed by the American engineer J. Welles Wilder, who presented it in 1978 in his book on new concepts in technical trading systems; the default setting of 14 periods comes from the same source and is still used almost everywhere, as the description of the indicator sums up.

What the RSI does not measure matters just as much: it knows nothing about news, nothing about trading volume and nothing about valuation. Only past closing prices enter the calculation. A high reading therefore means only that the winning days of the past two weeks clearly outweighed the losing days. The label “overbought” carries a judgement into a number that holds none itself.

The RSI formula: average gain divided by average loss

The calculation runs in three steps. First, the change against the previous day is determined for each day and sorted as a gain or a loss. Then an average is formed over 14 days, with the new average weighting the old one by thirteen fourteenths and adding the current day at one fourteenth. This smoothing keeps a single outlier from tipping the reading over. Finally the index value is built from the ratio of the two averages: one hundred minus one hundred divided by one plus that ratio.

The calculation on real Bitcoin closing prices

For October 11, 2026 the smoothed average gain came to $512.00 a day and the smoothed average loss to $430.36. The ratio is 1.1897. That produces an RSI of 54.33, rounded to the 54.3 in the headline. You can check it with a pocket calculator: one hundred divided by 2.1897 gives 45.67, and one hundred minus 45.67 is 54.33.

The same calculation shows why the RSI rarely reaches the edges. For a reading of 70 the average gain would have to be 2.33 times the average loss, for a reading of 30 only 0.43 times. Both demand a markedly one-sided run of trading days across two weeks, and such runs are the exception.

Behind the RSI sits a division that can be checked with pen and paper.

Only 7.1 percent of all days were above 70, and 3.7 percent below 30

The count bears that out. Across the 705 days of our series the RSI was above 70 on 50 days and below 30 on 26 days. That comes to 7.1 and 3.7 percent respectively. On the remaining 615 days, so for a good 87 percent of the time, the indicator sat in the neutral zone between the two thresholds and delivered no signal at all by the textbook reading. The extreme values of the series were 15.4 and 85.9 points, within a price range of $58,531.90 to $124,766.50.

Overbought above 70, oversold below 30: where the two thresholds come from

Overbought, on this reading, describes a state in which a price has risen too far too fast in the view of the people applying the indicator, and oversold the reverse case. The thresholds of 70 and 30 are no constants of nature but suggestions from Wilder’s book. Some practitioners work with 80 and 20 in strongly trending markets to cut the number of false signals.

For Bitcoin that shift is more than a nicety, because the market knows long, steep trending phases. In an uptrend the RSI can stay above 70 for weeks without the price turning. Selling on the first break above the threshold means missing the larger part of the move. That behaviour is what sits behind our measurement.

What really happened after the 50 overbought days

For each of the 50 days with an RSI above 70 we looked up where the price stood fourteen trading days later. In 32 cases it was higher, in 18 lower. The mean change across all 50 cases came to plus 2.1 percent. An investor who had sold on every break above the 70 mark would have sold too early in close to two thirds of cases.

For the neutral zone between 30 and 70 the comparable figure is 51.5 percent higher prices after fourteen days, with a mean change of plus 0.2 percent. That is roughly the coin toss you would expect in a market with a slight upward drift. The overbought zone was therefore better even than the average.

Oversold was the weaker signal: 46.2 percent ended higher

The other side disappoints more plainly still. Of the 26 days with an RSI below 30, only 12 led to a higher price after fourteen days, which is 46.2 percent, and the mean change came to minus 0.2 percent. No buy signal follows from that. Buying into the panic was wrong slightly more often than right.

These figures need care in the reading, and we say so plainly: 50 and 26 cases are small samples, the time windows overlap, one single cryptocurrency is involved and a period of not quite two years. The measurement does not refute the RSI. All it shows is this: the two thresholds on their own carried no decision over this period.

Divergence between price and indicator: the textbook pattern and its gap

Experienced practitioners read the RSI less often through the thresholds anyway and more often through divergences. A divergence is present when price and indicator point in different directions, for instance when the price reaches a new high but the RSI at the matching high stays below its previous peak. That counts as a sign of fading momentum.

The weakness of the pattern lies in how late it arrives: whether a high really was a high is known only once the price has fallen. On a live chart a divergence often looks different again three candles later. The same goes for any signal that leans on lines drawn in hindsight; we described that for the distance to the 200-day moving average in our analysis of the 200-day line.

Timeframe changes the RSI result: daily, weekly and hourly charts

The same indicator delivers different values per timeframe, because it processes different closing prices. Every figure in this piece rests on daily candles. On the hourly chart the RSI swings far more widely and reaches the edges much more often; on the weekly chart it almost never does. This is the most common reason why two investors argue about the same coin and both can produce an indicator reading.

A plain rule for practice follows: an RSI value without the timeframe and the period length is not information. When a post says “the RSI is at 28” without stating whether the basis is daily or hourly, the claim cannot be verified. To have indicators evaluated automatically, the usual providers are set out in our comparison of crypto trading bots.

Limits of the RSI: an indicator replaces no buy or sell decision

The RSI describes the past in a single number. It holds no information about future supply and demand, about fund inflows, about regulatory deadlines or about the state of the broader market. In a portfolio whose positions already move closely together, a second indicator built on the same prices adds even less; how tightly the large coins hang together is shown by our calculation of correlation in a crypto portfolio.

There is also the fundamental problem of any back-calculated signal: every rule can be fitted to past data until it looks good. Our count above is deliberately kept blunt, with a fixed period length, fixed thresholds and a fixed horizon of fourteen days, so that nothing was made to fit after the fact. Longer-term patterns such as the four-year rhythm of the block reward halving can be looked up in our halving charts.

How to check the Bitcoin RSI yourself without paid software

No subscription software is needed for this. What it takes is the daily closing prices of the past months, which every larger exchange publishes, and a spreadsheet. Set up a column with the change against the previous day, split gains and losses into two further columns, form the first simple average over 14 rows and then carry it forward with a weighting of thirteen to one. The last column sets the two averages in ratio and applies the formula.

The effort pays off for a reason that reaches beyond the RSI: once you have calculated an indicator yourself, you no longer take any chart on trust. The price data for our series comes from the daily closing prices for Bitcoin against the US dollar on the exchange Kraken, from November 6, 2024 to October 11, 2026.

Bitcoin RSI at 54.3: the next move in the price stays open

The indicator sits in the middle, and that is its most frequent position: on 87 percent of the days examined it lay between the two thresholds. The edges came rarely, and when they came they did not point in the direction their names promise, at least not in our series. As a description of the past two weeks the RSI is useful; as a basis for deciding on the next purchase it does not carry on its own.

  1. Always read the timeframe and period alongside the value. Note for every RSI reading which candle basis and which period length it is calculated on, otherwise it is not comparable. Which tools disclose both is set out in our overview of crypto analytics platforms.
  2. Fix your own horizon before you use a signal. Decide in advance over what period a signal is meant to hold, and test on historical data how it would have fared there. For automating that step, compare the providers in our list of crypto trading bots.
  3. Take trading costs into the calculation. Any signal that triggers often costs fees, and 0.2 percent per complete round trip beats a mean change of 0.2 percent. What trading really costs is shown by our comparison of crypto exchanges.
