TL;DR:

  • Coinbase’s Global Intelligence team took part in the “Joint Disruption Week” operation in London between October 6 and 9, 2026, alongside the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).
  • The joint actions targeted fraud networks in West Africa linked to fictitious cryptocurrency investments, law enforcement impersonation, and staged arrests conducted over video calls.
  • The Department of Justice reported that losses from online investment fraud reached $8.65 billion in 2025, representing an 89% year-over-year increase compared to the $4.57 billion recorded in 2023.

In a 4-day joint operation in London, Coinbase, the DOJ, and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) dismantled financial infrastructure and fraud networks operating across West Africa.

From October 6 to 9, investigative teams carried out intensive efforts tracking blockchain transfers in real time. This initiative supported the precautionary freezing of wallets and bank accounts linked to these criminal organizations.

According to an official announcement published by the platform on Tuesday, October 13, investigators cross-referenced on-chain ledgers with intelligence gathered from fraudulent websites, dummy profiles, and private messaging channels. The company noted that this technical correlation helped uncover links between transactions that previously appeared unrelated.

The modalities under investigation included fraudulent digital asset investment schemes, actors impersonating judicial officials, and staged arrests carried out via video calls to coerce victims.

Public-Private Cooperation Against Transnational Fraud

Leah Bressack, Vice President at Coinbase, noted that this deployment represents the operational continuation of procedures previously carried out against scam hubs in Southeast Asia. Firm analysts suggest that organized syndicates have begun expanding logistical footprints into West Africa as judicial enforcement intensifies across Asia.

This joint operation falls under a formal agreement executed on September 3, 2026, between the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, the Crown Prosecution Service of England and Wales, and the NCA.

Under the provisions of that pact, the agencies share intelligence on criminal syndicates, align tactical targets, and determine jurisdictional venues for forthcoming litigation.

The operational backdrop reflects relentless growth in digital environment scams. An FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report cited by U.S. authorities documented that victims lost $8.65 billion to investment fraud in 2025. The DOJ warned in its documentation that total losses could be substantially higher when accounting for incidents that go formally unreported.

In earlier interventions during June 2026, Coinbase froze over $3 million in crypto assets connected to illicit compounds in Asia, coordinating actions alongside Meta, Microsoft, and law enforcement agencies.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice restricted more than $52 million in digital assets on September 9 during an enforcement action against Xinbi Guarantee and associated providers. These entities marketed money laundering infrastructure and turnkey scam websites.

Illicit financial flows stemming from these crimes exhibit well-defined patterns across the regulated sector. A Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) report published on September 4, 2026, identified $12.7 billion in suspicious activity reports filed between September 2023 and December 2025.

FinCEN’s analysis determined that funds siphoned from victims are predominantly converted into the stablecoin Tether (USDT), before being routed through decentralized protocols or unregulated offshore exchanges.

As an immediate operational milestone, British and American authorities are reviewing the investigative case files compiled in London to unseal formal indictments and execute additional judicial seizure warrants before the close of the fourth quarter of 2026.
