TL;DR

  • US inflation climbed to 3.7% annually in September, while monthly CPI rose 0.6%, putting renewed pressure on financial markets.
  • Crypto-linked stocks suffered significant losses, with IREN falling 12.1%, American Bitcoin dropping 11.43%, Robinhood sliding 8.73%, and Strategy declining 6.41%.
  • Rising energy costs added uncertainty to the interest rate outlook, although Bitcoin and other digital assets remain influenced by broader market conditions and crypto-specific demand.

Crypto-linked stocks declined on Wednesday after US inflation accelerated in September, reviving concerns about interest rates and investor appetite for risk. IREN, American Bitcoin, Robinhood Markets, and Strategy recorded significant losses as traders assessed the latest economic data.

The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.7% year over year, compared with 3.4% in August. The report renewed attention on inflation pressures as investors evaluated the potential implications for monetary policy and financial assets, including cryptocurrencies.

Crypto Stocks Slide As Inflation Pressures Return

According to Yahoo Finance data recorded on October 14 at 19:07 UTC, IREN fell 12.1% to $30.59, while American Bitcoin Corp. (ABTC) dropped 11.43% to $7.67. Robinhood Markets (HOOD) declined 8.73% to $100.87, and Strategy (MSTR), a company known for its substantial Bitcoin treasury holdings, lost 6.41% to trade at $142.42.

Selling extended across other publicly traded companies with crypto exposure. Circle Internet Group (CRCL) dropped 6.65% to $78.66, Coinbase (COIN) declined 5.32% to $172.12, and BitMine Immersion Technologies (BMNR) fell 5.81% to $22.12.

These figures represent intraday prices rather than official closing values. While the broad decline coincided with the inflation report, the available data alone does not establish that the CPI release caused every stock’s movement.

For crypto investors, the sell-off highlights how mining companies, trading platforms, and firms holding digital assets can react to changes in economic expectations. Their share prices may also reflect operating costs, company-specific developments, financing conditions, and expectations about future cryptocurrency prices.

US inflation climbed to 3.7% annually in September, while monthly CPI rose 0.6%, putting renewed pressure on financial markets.

Rising Energy Costs Complicate The Inflation Outlook

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that monthly CPI increased 0.6% in September, following a 0.4% rise in August. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1%, accounting for more than half of the monthly increase in the overall index. The broader energy index climbed 5.2% during the month and stood 20.4% higher than a year earlier.

Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3% monthly, matching August’s increase. Its annual rate edged up to 2.6% from 2.4%, while shelter costs increased 0.4% and food prices remained unchanged.

The figures matter for crypto markets because persistent inflation can complicate expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts. Higher borrowing costs can reduce liquidity and weigh on speculative investments, although Bitcoin’s response depends on several factors beyond US monetary policy.
