TL;DR:

  • Aztec scheduled late 2030 for the completion of its comprehensive technical transition toward post-quantum cryptography schemes.
  • The roadmap establishes February 2027 as the deadline to deploy developer libraries safeguarding against “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks.
  • The technical schedule projects selecting new digital signature schemes in March 2027, public-key encryption in July 2027, and zero-knowledge proof systems in November 2027.

Aztec announced a plan to complete a comprehensive migration to post-quantum cryptography by late 2030, aiming to mitigate its infrastructure exposure to the advance of quantum threats. Project co-founder Zac Williamson, alongside Mike Connor, published the technical paper outlining this transition timeline.

The project seeks a phased replacement of elliptic curve-based cryptographic components before quantum processors achieve the operational capacity required to compromise them.

Selection Timeline and Cryptographic Hardening

Aztec’s technical report indicates that the strategy’s first milestone will arrive in February 2027, focusing on developer tooling and software. This preliminary rollout aims to prevent third parties from intercepting encrypted data today to decrypt it in the future using more powerful quantum hardware.

Subsequently, the team scheduled three selection phases throughout 2027. Official network data reveals that selecting a post-quantum digital signature scheme is slated for March 2027, followed by the adoption of a public-key encryption model in July 2027.

The design phase will conclude in November 2027 with the selection of a new proving system. Aztec currently relies on CHONK, a mechanism built on pairings and elliptic curves. Researchers are evaluating lattice-based alternatives or hash functions, driven by the operational requirement to generate zero-knowledge proofs directly on mobile devices and web browsers.

Technical documentation adds that the protocol plans a long-term reevaluation of the Poseidon2 hash function, considering options such as Blake2s and Blake3.

Executing the complete roadmap will demand technical synchronization with Ethereum, the base layer where Aztec settles transactions and manages data availability. The report notes that critical components—such as mainnet BLS12-381 KZG commitments and validator authentication methods—will dictate the Layer 2 rollout speed.

Aztec’s research team cautioned that a rushed deployment of novel cryptographic primitives could introduce immediate security flaws into the codebase. According to the report, AI-assisted audits identified critical vulnerabilities in earlier iterations that were resolved ahead of the software’s Version 6 release.

Other blockchain networks reported similar milestones in quantum readiness during October 2026. TRON enabled experimental support for FN-DSA-512 and ML-DSA-44 signatures on its Nile testnet, while the Cosmos ecosystem added native ML-DSA compatibility via its Ledger Security 2026.1 upgrade. Concurrently, Ethereum Layer 1 targets December 2029 for comprehensive post-quantum hardening.

Aztec’s next operational milestone is scheduled for February 2027 with the formal release of its hardened developer libraries, serving as the preparatory step ahead of the signature standard review set for March of that year.
