Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA extend automated driving partnership

Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA said on October 16, 2026, that they will extend their strategic partnership to develop the next generation of driver assistance and automated driving systems. The companies said the work will combine Mercedes-Benz engineering and MB.OS with NVIDIA Hyperion, Alpamayo Stack and the Halos safety system, but they did not provide commercial launch timing or financial terms.

Evidence and context

According to the NVIDIA newsroom announcement published October 16, 2026, the collaboration is intended to accelerate development of automated vehicles by linking Mercedes-Benz’s operating system and vehicle engineering with NVIDIA’s accelerated computing and AI stack. Mercedes-Benz said the partnership is aimed at new automated driving capabilities while maintaining the safety standards expected of its vehicles.

Jörg Burzer, a member of the board of management of Mercedes‑Benz Group AG and chief technology officer for development and procurement, said NVIDIA is the company’s most important strategic partner in automated driving and noted that the two companies previously developed the first Mercedes-Benz assistance system for urban point-to-point driving for the western world. Ali Kani, vice president of automotive at NVIDIA, said accelerated computing is giving vehicles the intelligence to understand the world and reason through complex driving situations.

The release says MB.OS supports new driving functions and over-the-air updates, while Hyperion provides the in-vehicle computing and sensor architecture. NVIDIA Alpamayo Stack is described as full-stack driving software with AI reasoning capabilities for point-to-point urban assistance, active safety and automated parking. NVIDIA Halos is presented as an added safety layer that includes a parallel safety stack with redundancy and guardrails.

The companies said these technologies support advanced driver assistance and the development of future SAE Level 4 applications, including robolimousines. The announcement should not be read as a statement that Level 4 driving is already commercially available; the release frames it as future development.

Beyond automated driving, Mercedes-Benz said it also uses NVIDIA technology in vehicle engineering simulation and in MO360, its digital production ecosystem, including virtual planning and AI-based applications. The companies said they are working to improve efficiency, flexibility and quality across Mercedes-Benz’s global production network.

Recent context includes NVIDIA’s October 15, 2026 announcement that Volvo Cars also expanded its partnership with the chipmaker on safe automated driving, and Mercedes-Benz’s January 7, 2026 description of MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO as an SAE Level 2 system. Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA first announced a software-defined vehicle collaboration in 2020, with an original rollout target beginning in 2024, though that earlier target was a plan rather than evidence of completed fleet-wide deployment.
