Lithium prices pulled back as the Chinese carbonate price took a hit from its 2026 highs.

Prices for lithium carbonate are moving in opposite directions from China, with prices pulling back from 2026 highs while lithium-related stock prices are struggling to hold onto their gains.

According to market data, lithium carbonate at press time was valued at CNY 104,400 per tonne, which is CNY 31,400, or 43.01%, higher over the last 12 months. However, the new reading is still below the highs seen in the market’s big run-up this year.

Meanwhile, the stock-basket chart that accompanies this graph tells a similar tale of a slow and uneven recovery, but on a different measure of the market. It closed at 261.88, which was 0.96 points lower and 0.37% below for the day.

Chinese Lithium Carbonate Pulls Back From Its Peak

As illustrated in the Trading Economics chart, Chinese lithium carbonate prices have been trading at around CNY 72,000 per tonne since the end of 2025. The price increased steadily during the month of December before picking up the pace at the beginning of 2026.

In particular, prices have remained on the rise since the spring and hit a high in May of almost CNY 200,000 per tonne. The market took a turn then. The prices fell through June and July and dipped slightly in August before dropping again in September and October.

Despite the 43.01% annual increase, the latest reading of CNY 104,400 positions carbonate at almost the same level as in late 2025. The pullback highlights the speed at which a powerful commodity rally can come to an end.

Lithium Stocks Struggle to Sustain Their Recovery

Meanwhile, the lithium-stock chart is alternating swings instead of a steady rise. The index has increased from approximately 120 in 2023 and dipped back into 2024 early this year.

The rally started in late 2024, and the index crossed above 350, but a significant reversal in early 2025 reversed some of those gains.

Since then, the basket has fluctuated from about 250 to 350, dipped into the 220s in 2026, and resumed its upward trend toward 290. This was the lowest level since the 261.88 reading on January 1.

Technical Signals Point to Caution

Significantly, the technical chart is using a Bollinger Bands Strategy 20/2 period. The blue “BBandLE” markers mark long-entry signals, and the red “BBandSE” markers mark short-entry signals.

The most recent red marker is located close to a recent rebound high and then a pullback to 261.88. Nevertheless, such signals are not conclusive that the stock basket is going to keep on dropping.

For now, the two charts combined indicate gains over a longer timeframe have failed to offset what has been weak lately. Nevertheless, the market forces that impact lithium carbonate prices and those that impact a lithium-stock basket are not the same, and these should not be treated as synonyms.
