The Ethereum gas limit will be increased significantly due to the Glamsterdam update approaching activation on the mainnet. The development team at Ethereum is planning to increase the gas limit from 60 million to 200 million on the Hoodi testnet on October 26, 2026.
This increase in the gas limit will lead to an increase in the capacity of the blocks by 3.3 times.
Toni Wahrstätter, an Ethereum researcher, explains that Hoodi will be the last testnet to receive Glamsterdam before any possible launch on the mainnet. Developers have yet to confirm any date for launching the mainnet.

Ethereum Gas Limit Increase Scheduled for Hoodi
Glamsterdam activation is set for October 26, 17:42:48 UTC at epoch 132,352, slot 4,235,264 on Hoodi, as reported by the Ethereum Foundation on October 16.
On the other hand, the Ethereum gas limit on Hoodi will increase to 200 million due to a planned increase, just like the one scheduled for Sepolia. Glamsterdam activation on Sepolia took place on October 6.
Hoodi’s activation will be a crucial step for testing. The developers will be able to test the capabilities of the network regarding the increased gas limit and see what problems may appear. The mainnet upgrade schedule will be revealed when the client team comes to a decision.
How the Ethereum Gas Limit Could Affect Network Capacity
Ethereum gas limit sets the amount of computation that may be done within one block. Every transaction uses up gas depending on its computational requirements, and therefore the gas limit affects the number of transactions that may be done within the block.
An increase in the Ethereum gas limit from 60 million to 200 million would leave sufficient space for more transactions and sophisticated smart contract functions. Nevertheless, an increase in the gas limit does not necessarily mean an increase in the transaction throughput.
According to Wahrstätter, the target for the future could be 300 million, given the suggestion of 200 million. This is still only a possible goal and not something already achieved in Glamsterdam.
Glamsterdam Introduces More Ethereum Scaling Changes
The upgrade is comprised of multiple additions other than the increased Ethereum gas limit. This includes enshrining proposer-builder separation (ePBS), which seeks to keep the proposal and construction of blocks separated in Ethereum.
Another innovation in Glamsterdam is the block-level access list. This feature is geared towards identifying the state data that the transactions will need.
Other key changes include gas pricing tweaks that aim to take into account the cost of execution and state growth. This is significant since increasing the block size could put more strain on node infrastructure.
All of these changes are a part of Ethereum’s Layer 1 scaling strategy, which aims to scale capacity while maintaining network feasibility.
Hegotá Upgrade Could Follow in 2027
The plans for Ethereum do not end in Glamsterdam. The next upgrade after Glamsterdam, called Hegotá, will be released in 2027.
Founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, has said that this may be the last fork based on normal cryptography, while the future releases will focus on advanced cryptography, formal verification, consensus, and quantum resistance.
According to Wahrstätter, 23 Ethereum Improvement Proposals are being contemplated by developers for Hegotá. Two significant improvement proposals are FOCIL and Frame Transactions, even though whether they will eventually be adopted will depend on development considerations.
PeerDAS has been mentioned by Buterin as a solution that aims to help nodes in the process of verifying data availability without downloading data from all the blocks.
Ethereum Gas Limit Remains a Key Upgrade Milestone
Increasing the Ethereum Gas Limit is one of the key elements of Glamsterdam’s scaling goals. The increase to 200 million should allow for more transactions to be made possible, whereas other changes will be focused on improving the process of block construction and transaction execution.
Currently, the developers need to test Hoodi before setting up the schedule for the mainnet implementation. Although there have been talks about raising the number to 300 million in the future, nothing is confirmed yet.
The developments of Glamsterdam will affect Ethereum’s scaling progress, while Hegotá will continue doing so in 2027.
