Tech stocks face pressure from AI worries

A hotter-than-expected inflation reading raised talk that the Federal Reserve will keep raising interest rates. Investors also worried about the debt AI companies are taking on to build chips and data centers.

The Philadelphia semiconductor index fell 11.41% last week. Memory stocks also dropped after a Chinese firm said it had made progress in memory chip production.

CoreWeave lost roughly a fourth of its value in the week. Oracle fell 9.31%, and the cost of insuring against defaults on bonds from both companies rose.

Deutsche Bank analysts said the main concern last week was AI-related names, with credit markets showing signs of distress in that area.

Meta will be the first of the large AI spenders to report. The company released its Muse AI model in September, and it has drawn millions of downloads.

Muse can help users book travel and set up small business tools. Meta has also released an open-weight version of its Muse Spark model for coding.

In the second quarter, Meta posted record revenue, but earnings fell short of estimates and shares slid. Its AI spending also weighed on profits that quarter.

Tesla missed earnings estimates last quarter after spending heavily on self-driving and robot projects. Its third-quarter vehicle deliveries did come in ahead of estimates.

Last week, Tesla showed off a redesigned Roadster that used SpaceX rocket technology to jump off a ramp and land on all four wheels. Elon Musk said production should begin in 2028.

Tesla also faces a probe into safety standards for Cybercab, its driverless ridesharing service.

Streaming, space and travel companies also report

SpaceX reports Tuesday after the close. The company went public earlier this year and put its Starship rocket into orbit for the first time in September.

This month, SpaceX also announced a deal to buy cellular spectrum licenses from Grain Management. The deal is reportedly worth about $8 billion in cash.

Netflix reports Tuesday at 4:01 p.m. ET. Last week, the company reportedly said it would cut about 6% of its workforce, or roughly 1,000 jobs, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It is the largest round of job cuts at Netflix since 2022. The company forecast slower revenue growth after its second-quarter results, and a bid for Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming and studio assets failed earlier this year.

General Motors reports Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. ET. The automaker recently announced a partnership with Lockheed Martin to expand its defense business.

Lam Research reports Wednesday, with a call at 5 p.m. ET. The chipmaking equipment maker has seen strong demand during the AI buildout. IBM also reports Wednesday.

Airlines take their turn on Thursday. American Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska Air Group and Southwest Airlines all report.

Air travel fell about 5% from a year earlier in September. Delta Air Lines recently gave a softer-than-expected outlook.

Comcast reports Thursday at 8:30 a.m. ET. Its shares jumped this summer after it announced plans to spin off NBCUniversal.

Western Digital closes the week, releasing fiscal first-quarter results after the closing bell Thursday, with a call at 4:30 p.m. ET.
