Wintermute, the largest cryptocurrency market maker, has drawn a “red line” for digital assets at $82,500 for Bitcoin. According to the company’s latest weekly report, the current price compression is unlikely to last: with the upcoming Fed meeting, the US midterm elections, and earnings season ahead, analysts openly state that “we don’t think the range holds through them.”
The market is preparing for an inevitable volatility explosion that should end the prolonged lull this fall.
US inflation hits Nasdaq, but Bitcoin is holding for now
The catalyst for market anxiety was US inflation accelerating to 3.7%. The monthly 0.3% rise in the core index confirmed that rising energy prices have begun to spill over into underlying inflation, triggering a 5.52% crash in the Nasdaq technology index. Defensive capital flows went into Brent crude (+5.00%) and US government bonds (+2.65%), and the returning macro correlation immediately destabilized digital assets.
Against this backdrop, Bitcoin lost 1.99% and was squeezed into a corridor around $82,500, turning former resistance into a key line of defense. During the outgoing week, the bulls already withstood a local breakdown to $80,400 caused by net outflows from spot ETFs of $679 million, but held their positions.
Wintermute emphasizes that “Bitcoin’s 3.5-point lead over the Nasdaq shows it holding up better than the macro tape would suggest,” with Bitcoin now acting as the main defensive asset. A breakout above $87,000 would open the way to the highs, whereas a clean loss of the $82.5k level would send the price back to test the low $70,000s.
Investors flee altcoins, and the market freezes in anticipation of Wednesday
While the flagship balances on the edge, an open liquidity crisis has begun in the altcoin market: the sector dropped 5.69% over the week. Wintermute’s trading desk notes that “flow in alts is becoming one-sided apart from a select set of higher-quality large-cap alts,” while free money is being pulled out and concentrated in Bitcoin and Ethereum, which lost 7.0% over the week.
The market consensus is unambiguous that “BTC needs to move higher before altcoins can resume any broad-based rally,” so independent growth of alternative tokens (including XRP) should not be expected right now.
Analysts state that “the risk-reward looks more compelling in majors than in altcoins right now,” as the internal correlation charts of the top 50, 100, and 250 assets have again moved up in sync toward peak values, confirming that the market is losing its individuality and preparing to move in lockstep.
The market maker names Wednesday’s FOMC meeting as the main point of breakout from the prolonged range, noting that “the 28 October FOMC is the likeliest point for the break, and it cuts both ways.” Hawkish Fed rhetoric would drag the Nasdaq lower and push Bitcoin down, whereas a dovish tone from the central bank combined with strong corporate earnings would give the bulls the fuel to storm psychological highs.
