TL;DR
- The net annual emission rate of APT dropped from 5% to 1.5%, following the approval of four governance proposals implemented between February and March 2026.
- The total supply was formally capped at 2.1 billion tokens, with 210 million Foundation and Community units permanently locked.
- Validator staking rewards were slashed from 5.19% to a flat 2.6% rate, contracting annual issuance from 43 million to roughly 20 million APT.
Aptos implemented a profound overhaul of its economic model that reduced the expansion rate of the APT supply by approximately 70%. The measure follows a series of reforms approved by the community between February 19 and March 19, 2026, which reconfigure protocol incentives and curb structural dilution for holders.
The Layer 1 network, developed by former Meta engineers and operational since October 2022, introduced comprehensive changes to curb algorithmic inflation. A report published on October 20 by Blockworks Research notes that, with funding from the Aptos Foundation, the combination of these measures placed the ecosystem on a technical trajectory geared toward an eventual deflationary scenario.
The approved modifications established an absolute hard cap of 2.1 billion tokens, compared to a circulating supply hovering around 1.21 billion units. Additionally, the approved framework decreed the permanent lock of 210 million tokens originally allocated to the Foundation and the community fund, preventing their transfer or delegation in staking schemes.
The second component of the reform consisted of halving validation yields. The annual reward rate went from 5.19% to a flat percentage of 2.6%, shrinking the gross generation of new tokens from 43 million to around 20 million units annually. With this calibration, net issuance growth shifted from hovering near 5% per year to posting 1.5%.
In parallel, the network increased the base gas cost per transaction tenfold. The average fee transitioned from $0.00004 to $0.0003, remaining below a fraction of a cent while directly boosting the token absorption capacity. Aptos has applied a permanent destruction mechanism across all gas fees since its launch.
Burn Mechanisms and Transaction Volume Dynamics
Prior to the network cost adjustment, the daily burn volume hovered around $242, offsetting only 0.2% of the new tokens minted each day. Data compiled by Blockworks Research indicates that over the 30 days leading up to the report’s release, daily burns averaged $3,500, managing to neutralize nearly 10% of current issuance.
The report attributes half of this improvement to the contraction in validator expenditures and the remainder to the market price of APT, which reduces the dollar value required to match emissions.
On-chain transaction velocity exhibited notable swings throughout 2026. Metrics climbed from 4.5 million transactions per day in February to peaks surpassing 12 million in June, stabilizing near 9 million daily by the end of September.
The bulk of this transactional throughput was concentrated on the derivatives platform Decibel, a perpetual futures protocol developed within Aptos Labs‘ incubation program. According to the research firm’s analysis, Decibel processed roughly 98% of all operations recorded across the ecosystem during that window.
The protocol has not yet achieved net deflationary status. Blockworks projections indicate that the infrastructure would need to expand its current trading activity tenfold for gas burns to outpace scheduled minting, requiring a shift from 105 transactions per second to a steady average of 1,050 transactions per second.
Under the Net Tokenholder Income metric calculated by the analytics firm, Aptos recorded a positive return of +$4.21 per $10,000 of fully diluted value at the close of August 2026. Over that same timeframe, comparative metrics placed Solana at +$0.15, while Ethereum registered -$0.67 and Sui posted -$5.67.
The corporate unlock schedule marks the next structural inflection point for the protocol. Token vesting windows for investors and core contributors conclude in October 2026, dropping annual cliff releases from 135 million APT to 21 million units going forward.
