Key Takeaways

The Blockchain Trail, Examined

Onchain sleuths spotted the move early today morning, reporting that whales had been “continuing to accumulate” after three newly created wallets received 1,090 BTC from Wintermute.

Each address first received a tiny test deposit of 0.0002 to 0.0003 BTC, following which the first two took their main payments in the same block (at 21:30 UTC on Oct. 20), and the third filled up just after midnight.

Typically, the movements resemble how desks deliver coins to a client who wants to confirm the address works before nine figures are shifted.

Who Actually Buys Through Wintermute?

Wintermute is one of crypto’s largest market makers and runs an over-the-counter (OTC) desk, where funds, corporations and wealthy individuals buy large blocks without pushing exchange order books. Coins leaving an OTC desk for fresh, single-purpose wallets usually signal a completed purchase heading into cold storage, not a trader preparing to sell.

The buyer’s identity is unknown, but the pattern is not new given that on Oct. 14, Lookonchain reported that five newly created wallets had received 1,162 BTC (worth $96.77 million) from Wintermute over 12 hours. Put the two together and roughly 2,252 BTC, or about $187 million, has moved through the same channel into new wallets in seven days.

That is a meaningful bid in a month when other big holders were heading the opposite way, with Bitcoin.com News reporting that popular treasury MARA sent 1,000 BTC to various exchanges over five days while a decade-old wallet moved 500 BTC after 10 years of silence.

Where Bitcoin’s Price Sits Currently

Bitcoin is currently trading near $82,750, up about 0.9% on the day and Gemini noted that the asset has closed above $80K for the 33rd day in a row. The desk’s own coverage showed bitcoin’s price tagged $83,000 on Oct. 20 as short sellers took $45 million in liquidations.

Institutional flows lined up with the whale as well, with U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) taking in $527 million on Oct. 19, led by Blackrock. The figure was the biggest 2026 inflow for the issuer.

The Catch in All of This

Not every signal points upward, as hours after the ETF inflow, bitcoin on Coinbase traded $115 below Binance and OKX, a discount that usually points to heavier selling from U.S. spot traders. A private OTC buyer can accumulate quietly while public U.S. order books lean the other way.

There is also the question of what the buyer does next since fresh wallets can be cold storage for years, or a staging area for collateral, custody transfers or a fund launch. Until the coins move again, the only hard fact is the size of the bet.
