The U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced “Operation Blackout” as a coordinated crackdown on international scam compounds that target American citizens through online fraud.

Instead of waiting for victims to lose money and then investigating individual cases, the operation aims to dismantle the criminal networks, physical facilities, and digital infrastructure used to run these scams.

The scammers’ spiderweb

According to a statement given by the FBI, these compounds operate across Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, functioning like entire towns with housing and other facilities.

They are allegedly controlled by criminal syndicates that use these operations to defraud people through fake investment platforms, online impersonation, and other digital schemes.

Remarking on the same, Director Kash Patel of the FBI said,

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with our partners at DOJ and the United States Attorney’s Offices, have seized over $17 billion from these scam compound fraud centers. Seized it. That means that’s money we got back.

The missing piece from the puzzle

Besides this, there are also ongoing efforts in Ghana and Nigeria. There, too, the authorities have reportedly arrested around 300 individuals and seized another $15 million linked to scams targeting American senior citizens.

Now, the key concern is that these compounds may also rely on human trafficking and forced criminal labor. Hence, it’s natural to assume that trafficked individuals can be confined and coerced into contacting potential victims online, while also persuading them to transfer money into fraudulent investment schemes.

Additionally, another concern is that dismantling compounds alone may not eliminate the threat. This, because criminal networks can relocate, rebuild their infrastructure, and continue operating across borders.

President Trump’s bold move against scammers

As expected, this update has coincided with a recent report from AMBCrypto, which highlighted how U.S President Donald Trump’s administration is intensifying its crackdown on overseas crypto scam networks.

So far, authorities have reportedly frozen nearly $1 billion in cryptocurrencies and have shut down over 500 fraudulent websites.

Patel praised President Trump for these efforts, stating,

There’s never been a president who has brought us together like President Trump has.

Final Summary

  • The FBI, along with partners at the DOJ and the U.S. Attorney’s Offices, has seized over $17 billion from these scam compound fraud centers.
  • Dismantling compounds alone may not eliminate the threat as criminal networks can relocate and continue operating across borders.
