Crypto investment giant Galaxy Digital’s research unit Galaxy Research has spotted a mystery poem popping up on the Bitcoin blockchain for the last two weeks.
According to Galaxy Research, an unknown user has sent 26 duplicates of the same poem onto the Bitcoin blockchain.
The mysterious poem is: “thoughtless quartz clocks drift / blocks stack each a strict proof / timechain keeps score”
Galaxy Research took to X on Oct. 24 to explain that the mystery sender has been injecting the same message into Bitcoin transactions.
It stored the duplicates in 103-byte OP_RETURN outputs that have surpassed the previous default relay limit on Bitcoin of 83 bytes.
Moreover, the research unit found that the same cryptographic keys have been used to issue another poem twice.
Therefore, the total number of mystery messages has now reached 28 in only 12 days.
What is the mystery poem for?
The researchers are yet to figure out the mystery sender’s motive.
Galaxy Research said that it is unlikely the activities are associated with traditional money laundering, as the funds are just moving between the sender and the custodial service.
Of 28 deposits and 14 round trips, the researchers found only 8,015 satoshis of mining fees and the service’s 100k satoshi deduction one time (on Oct. 19).
The researchers from Galaxy Research then theorized about what the mystery activities might be.
The sender may be trying to fake the deposit metrics or transaction volume for a custodial platform.
The activities may also be an automated integration test of sorts in production.
It is also possible that an autonomous AI agent has been given access to a Bitcoin wallet and has been tasked to make transactions.
Nevertheless, the researchers could not confirm these theories.
According to Galaxy Research, if the current trend continues, we will see the 27th duplicate of the poem appear about 14 hours after the 26th.
As of now, no one knows the mystery sender’s identity or what the mysterious Bitcoin transactions are for.
