Ripple Targets Corporate Cash With RLUSD Returns

Ripple has introduced 24/7 Returns for eligible corporate customers, allowing qualifying digital assets, including RLUSD, to generate income through its treasury platform outside traditional banking hours.

The October 26 announcement covers assets held in a Ripple wallet, subject to program requirements. Ripple says businesses can participate without independently managing the underlying digital-asset transactions. The release does not specify an APY, fees, the investment strategy or detailed withdrawal terms.

Key Takeaways

  • The returns capability is offered through Ripple Treasury.
  • RLUSD’s reserve backing is separate from participation in an income program.
  • Existing money-market investments already accrue income daily.

The capability accompanies an update connecting cash forecasting and payments with Ripple’s existing treasury tools for assessing liquidity under company policies. Offering investments within that software could reduce the need for a separate interface. Ripple names American Airlines and Trax among treasury-platform customers, but does not identify them as users of 24/7 Returns.

RLUSD backing is separate from the returns agreement

RLUSD’s reserves support redemption of the payment token. Ripple’s public User Terms permit it to retain net reserve income above required backing. Those terms cover users without a RippleNet Home customer account; account holders have a separate customer agreement.

Ordinary token ownership therefore does not establish a right to reserve earnings. A corporate returns arrangement adds its own agreement governing how assets are used, income is calculated and losses are allocated.

That agreement determines whether the participant owns fund shares, provides financing or has some other claim. Each structure gives the company different rights if an investment loses value or a counterparty fails. The stablecoin’s dollar backing does not answer those questions.

Ripple’s broader treasury materials describe repo and fund investments

An official product overview describes overnight secured repo access through Ripple Prime, tokenized money-market funds such as BlackRock’s BUIDL, and a money-market fund portal on XRP Ledger. These are part of Ripple’s broader treasury offering; the new release does not connect a particular route to 24/7 Returns.

In a repo transaction, the cash provider buys securities that the other party agrees to repurchase at a specified price. The difference between those prices produces the financing return. If the counterparty fails to repurchase, the provider may need to realize the collateral’s value under the agreement, exposing it to delays or a shortfall.

A money-market fund pools cash to invest in short-term instruments. Participants receive income from those investments after expenses, while access to their money depends on the fund’s redemption arrangements. Tokenizing the shares changes how they are represented and transferred; the underlying investments and fund rules still determine their economics.

Weekend income is different from usable weekend cash

Traditional cash investments can earn while markets are closed. Fidelity’s explanation of money-market funds describes dividends accruing daily and paying monthly. Earning over a weekend is therefore not, by itself, a new capability.

The operational opportunity is moving between an investment and a payment outside normal transaction cutoffs. Consider a company with an investment balance and a supplier requiring dollars in a bank account on Sunday. The company needs to exit the investment, obtain the payment currency and complete a transfer the supplier can receive. Moving RLUSD onchain would complete only part of that route.

A supplier that accepts RLUSD could remove the immediate bank-dollar conversion step. The company would still need access to its invested assets in time to send the tokens. Payment acceptance and investment redemption are separate requirements.

For short holdings, the economic comparison is the additional return over the company’s existing cash arrangement, after any extra costs.

Corporate investment policies control the allocations

Three-quarters of organizations surveyed in the Association for Financial Professionals’ 2026 liquidity research maintained written short-term investment policies. These govern matters such as permitted vehicles, credit standards, allocation limits and approval procedures.

Digital-product use was limited: 1% of respondents reported pilots or limited use of stablecoins or tokenized funds. A separate finding showed that 86% would select real-time money-market funds if those products complied with company policies. That measures interest in faster access to approved funds, rather than a commitment to stablecoins.

Offering 24/7 Returns inside treasury software gives Ripple a way to present the product where companies already assess cash needs. Investment approval remains a separate decision: a finance team can use the platform for forecasting and payments while keeping its cash in other permitted instruments.
