TON Finality Claim Puts Telegram’s Blockchain Speed Push Back In Focus

Pavel Durov has put TON’s speed back in focus after claiming that the network leads Layer-1 blockchains in finality time. In a post on X, Durov wrote:

Supporters are now framing TON as roughly 6,000x faster than Bitcoin on finality, based on TON’s sub-second benchmark versus Bitcoin’s commonly used six-confirmation settlement window. The claim gives TON a strong speed narrative for payments, mini apps, trading flows, and other consumer-facing products where long settlement waits can weaken the user experience.

TON’s April Upgrade Made Sub-Second Finality Live

TON’s speed claim follows its April consensus upgrade. The TON Foundation announced that sub-second finality went live on mainnet after the Catchain 2.0 upgrade, reducing confirmation time from around 10 seconds to roughly one second. The same upgrade added 400-millisecond block production and a streaming layer designed to push network updates to applications more quickly.

Chainspect’s live blockchain dashboard also places TON among the fastest major Layer-1 networks by finality, with TON showing sub-second finality while Bitcoin remains near one hour and Ethereum remains above 12 minutes. The exact dashboard number can shift as network measurements update, but the broader ranking supports the central point: TON is competing near the top of the finality table among major Layer-1 chains.

Fast finality is especially relevant for Telegram-native payments, mini apps, trading flows, gaming, rewards, and consumer products. A wallet transfer or app interaction that settles in under a second feels closer to a normal web or messaging experience than a traditional blockchain wait.

Speed Is Not The Only Network Test

TON’s finality advantage does not remove the other questions around the network. Bitcoin’s slower settlement is tied to a different design goal: proof-of-work security, conservative block production, and a deep settlement market built around probabilistic finality. TON is optimized for fast consumer-scale activity through proof-of-stake consensus and Telegram-linked distribution.

The trade-off now sits around adoption, validator concentration, developer activity, liquidity, and sustained user demand. Durov recently moved Telegram closer to TON’s infrastructure layer, with Telegram expected to become the network’s largest validator and play a larger role in the technical roadmap. A recent Toncoin market update covered how that shift boosted TON while also raising concentration questions around Telegram’s growing influence.

For developers, the finality upgrade only helps users if applications are built to surface the speed. TON’s official guidance points developers toward streaming APIs and updated data layers so apps can show transaction status in real time instead of relying on slower polling systems.

The latest Durov post gives TON a clean performance narrative at a time when Layer-1 networks are competing for real consumer use cases, not only speculative activity. Bitcoin remains the strongest settlement asset in crypto by security, liquidity, and market depth. TON’s claim is narrower and more product-focused: if Telegram can turn sub-second finality, low fees, and native app distribution into daily payment and mini-app usage, the network’s speed advantage becomes a user-experience advantage rather than a chart statistic.
