xAI’s Grok Build now integrates with OpenCode, offering developers advanced coding tools via an open-source terminal agent.
Developers using xAI‘s Grok Build can now access the coding assistant directly through OpenCode, an open-source terminal-based coding agent. This integration, announced on May 21, 2026, extends Grok’s reach to developers seeking open-source solutions while leveraging xAI’s advanced AI coding tools.
OpenCode is available as both a terminal agent and a standalone desktop app. By connecting their SuperGrok or X Premium subscriptions, users can start coding with Grok Build, which runs on Grok 4.3, the latest AI model from xAI. The setup process is straightforward: users install OpenCode via a single command and link their Grok account using xAI’s OAuth system.
Given the growing interest in open-source development tools, this move positions xAI to attract more developers into its ecosystem. OpenCode’s compatibility with Grok Build aligns with xAI’s broader strategy of providing agentic developer workflows, first introduced with Grok Build earlier this month. At $300/month, Grok Build is designed for serious developers, offering features like multimodal input, a 1 million token context window, and reduced API costs.
Strategic Context
xAI, founded by Elon Musk in 2023, has been aggressive in rolling out updates to its Grok platform. Earlier this month, Grok 4.3 was launched, boasting significant advancements in speed, functionality, and pricing. The integration with OpenCode is part of xAI’s push to solidify Grok’s utility in practical developer tasks, including coding and reasoning, rather than limiting it to chatbot-style interactions.
This announcement comes on the heels of xAI’s reorganization under SpaceXAI, a division formed after SpaceX absorbed xAI earlier in May. While this restructuring aims to streamline operations, it also puts pressure on Grok to demonstrate market value as part of a larger AI and space-tech strategy.
What About the GROK Token?
Interestingly, there is an unrelated cryptocurrency trading under the ticker GROK. As of May 21, 2026, the token is priced at $0.00043873, down 0.01182% over 24 hours. Despite its name, this token has no official connection to xAI or Grok’s AI products, and there is no indication it represents equity or revenue claims on xAI. Traders should approach with caution, as the token appears to be leveraging Grok’s branding without authorization.
Looking Ahead
For developers, the integration of Grok Build into OpenCode opens up new possibilities for leveraging AI in open-source projects. xAI has also hinted at additional open-source integrations in the pipeline, signaling its commitment to expanding developer-focused offerings. As the AI arms race intensifies, xAI’s ability to attract and retain developers could prove critical to its success in both the software and broader SpaceXAI ecosystem.
