Celo teams with Google Cloud to enable users to claim free USA₮ stablecoins via a proof-of-human identity system. Here’s what you need to know.
Celo, in partnership with Google Cloud and Self, has launched the USA₮ Mainnet Faucet, enabling verified users to claim free USA₮ stablecoins. This initiative leverages proof-of-human identity technology to distribute the Tether-backed, U.S.-regulated stablecoin to eligible participants worldwide.
USA₮, launched by Tether earlier this year, is a federally regulated stablecoin issued through Anchorage Digital Bank. Unlike Tether’s global USDT, USA₮ is designed for compliance with the U.S. GENIUS Act, targeting domestic settlement and institutional use cases. As of August 20, 2026, USA₮ holds a market cap of approximately $184.1 million and trades near its $1 peg at $0.999014, according to CoinMarketCap data.
Celo becomes the second network to host native USA₮ after Ethereum. What sets this faucet apart is the integration of zero-knowledge (ZK) proof technology via Self, ensuring user privacy during identity verification. Users can verify their eligibility using government-issued IDs without transmitting raw personal data. Verified participants receive an initial 0.5 USA₮ directly to their Celo wallet at no cost, with additional rewards for sending and holding balances.
How to Access the Faucet
The Mainnet Faucet is open globally, excluding users from OFAC-sanctioned countries. To claim, users must:
- Visit the Mainnet Faucet portal.
- Connect a Celo-supported wallet such as Valora, MetaMask, or Ledger.
- Verify identity through Self using a biometric passport or government-issued ID.
- Receive 0.5 USA₮ upon successful verification, with additional incentives for sending and holding the stablecoin.
Expanding USA₮ Adoption
This faucet launch aligns with broader adoption efforts for USA₮ within the Celo ecosystem. The stablecoin is already integrated as a native gas currency and supports mint and burn functionality. Valora added USA₮ support on day one, while Squid, a cross-chain liquidity protocol with over 1 million transactions on Celo, enables swaps to USA₮ from over 100 chains. MiniPay and other DeFi protocols are expected to expand staking and lending capabilities soon.
For Tether, USA₮ represents a strategic move to capture market share in the U.S.-regulated payment and institutional space, directly competing with Circle’s USDC. While USDT remains Tether’s dominant global offering, USA₮’s compliance-first framework and Anchorage-issued reserves provide a foothold for tapping into regulated U.S. markets.
With a market cap nearing $185 million and active support within the Celo ecosystem, USA₮ is positioning itself as a key player in the stablecoin sector. The faucet initiative provides an incentive for new users to engage with the currency while showcasing the potential of ZK technology for privacy-preserving identity solutions.
