Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is once again in the news, promoting the integration of AI agents with wallets. The top executive of the world’s second-largest crypto exchange has been a vocal supporter of the future role of these agentic AI programs. He stated that his company is collaborating with other organizations under the Linux Foundation to develop a new payment layer for these automated programs.

Based on this latest post, Armstrong is reinforcing his previous narrative that AI agents are the future and will conduct more online transactions than humans, fundamentally reshaping commerce entirely.
However, a dedicated payment layer for bots is currently missing, and that is where the X402 Foundation comes in.
What is the x402 Foundation?
The x402 Foundation is a new collaborative effort under the Linux Foundation. It includes several notable firms like Coinbase, Cloudflare, and Stripe. According to the Coinbase CEO, groundbreaking commerce/business opportunities will arise when AI agents can transact freely, and there is infrastructure to support these interactions.
 
The x402 Foundation draws on the long-dormant HTTP protocol 402, aka “Payment Required,” and aims to convert it into an effective tool for a large number of AI transactions. AI agents can engage with a server through this 402 call and make micropayments, possibly in the form of stablecoins. There is no human involvement in this regime, allowing seamless machine-to-machine interactions based on digital currency.
Coinbase is betting heavily on AI protocols to leverage the digital currency revolution, especially for countless mundane tasks online. It believes x402 is the right platform to help scale this initiative and build a bridge between AI and crypto to help serve the masses.
