Ripple-promoted XRP is once again attracting attention across the cryptosphere as expectations build around its role in the next evolution of decentralized finance (DeFi).
With growing momentum in DeFi innovation, one expert believes XRP could emerge as a key driver in the sector’s next major adoption wave, potentially reshaping how value moves across blockchain networks.
XRP’s DeFi Takeover
In a post on X, popular XRPL validator Vet noted that traditional decentralized finance still has “a long way to go” before it can realistically usurp traditional finance. However, he also suggested that XRP is well positioned to play a key role in enabling a more sustainable transition by bridging the gap between conventional financial systems and the emerging decentralized economy.
In his view, XRP’s underlying protocol is uniquely designed for high-value financial applications, making it especially well-suited for use cases that aim to rival the core infrastructure of traditional finance (TradFi) in terms of efficiency and scalability.
Vet suggests that while many in the market may not be ready for what’s coming, the shift is inevitable—driven by XRP’s superior and more robust protocol design. Built to handle high-value use cases at scale, the pundit believes the XRPL is uniquely positioned to power a new era in which DeFi doesn’t just compete with traditional finance but begins to replace it.
Not So Fast: Flare Founder Challenges Bold XRP DeFi Claims
The Flare Network founder, Hugo Philion, was quick to push back against the hype around XRP’s DeFi ambitions, urging a more grounded perspective.
While acknowledging strong support for XRPL and XRP, he criticized the overconfident tone, noting that even the XRP Ledger has faced its share of rollout challenges and bugs. Philion stressed that claims of superior protocol design mean little without real-world performance at scale, calling for patience and proof before drawing any conclusions. Still, he remains optimistic about the broader space, welcoming XRP’s entry into DeFi as part of an ecosystem that’s here to stay.
XRP’s Edge: Why Less Complexity Means Less Risk
Responding to the criticism, Vet clarified that the point isn’t about dismissing other ecosystems, but about fundamental design trade-offs. He explained that the XRP protocol intentionally forgoes certain features seen elsewhere in order to avoid the downside risks they can introduce.
In particular, the ledger does not rely on highly composable smart contracts that can create layers of interconnected risk, nor does it incorporate staking mechanisms. In his view, this isn’t about “grave dancing” or rivalry between ecosystems, but rather a reflection of deliberate architectural choices—ones he believes make XRP a more robust and reliable foundation for serious financial applications.
Meanwhile, another X user cast doubt on XRPL’s position in the current DeFi landscape, citing its comparatively low trading activity compared with leading blockchain networks.
According to CoinGecko data, he noted that XRPL does not rank among the top chains by decentralized exchange (DEX) trading volume, suggesting that its on-chain market activity still trails behind more established DeFi ecosystems.
