Americans are suddenly searching for 2027 Social Security benefit changes, even though the biggest number affecting next year’s checks is still not official.

Current estimates center around a 3.4%–3.6% COLA, above the 2.8% increase applied in 2026. Coinpaper’s latest COLA forecast shows how projections have narrowed as new inflation data arrived.

A 3.5% COLA Could Add About $73 a Month

The average retired-worker benefit was about $2,086 per month in July 2026.

A 3.5% increase would add roughly $73 per month, lifting the average payment to around $2,159.

At 3.6%, the increase would be about $75, potentially pushing the average check above $2,160. Coinpaper recently calculated what a 3.6% increase could mean for monthly benefits.

The final figure remains uncertain because Social Security uses third-quarter CPI-W inflation data to calculate the adjustment.

The official 2027 COLA should become clear after September inflation data are released in October.

Other Social Security Numbers Will Change Too

The COLA is only one annual adjustment.

The taxable wage ceiling, earnings limits for people claiming benefits before full retirement age and maximum monthly benefit amounts can also change for 2027.

One thing is not changing: full retirement age has completed its phase-in to 67 for people born in 1960 or later.

The bigger question is whether a higher benefit actually improves retirees’ purchasing power.

A larger COLA usually reflects higher inflation, meaning rising costs for food, housing, health care and insurance can absorb much of the increase.

For now, 3.5% remains an estimate rather than the official 2027 Social Security COLA. The next inflation readings will determine whether that number moves before October.
