Aviva Investors, together with fintech giant Ripple, has deployed a tokenized share class for its flagship Sterling Liquidity Fund on the decentralized XRP Ledger (XRPL) blockchain. At stake is the manager’s main asset — a heavyweight with a £22 billion ($29 billion) portfolio placed in short-term UK government bonds.
Directing such a massive fund into the XRPL ecosystem opens a new chapter of institutional liquidity for the network; however, those who expected an instant migration of billions to the distributed ledger underestimated British pragmatism.
The company itself invested a modest £50 million ($66 million) in the new on-chain tranche. Together with the July dollar pilot, Aviva’s total digital assets in Europe barely exceeded £86 million ($116 million).
On the scale of the giant fund, this is an imperceptible 0.4% of its volume, but for the XRPL ecosystem and the conservative City of London, it is a real precedent of institutional use of the network, opening XRP infrastructure access to a market worth tens of billions across the ocean.
British compromise
Aviva did not rewrite the rules of the game or touch the fund’s structure, which has been operating stably since 2002. Instead of radical reforms, the company implemented an elegant “Digital Twin” scheme.
The XRPL blockchain was chosen deliberately here and acts as an impeccable electronic notary that records ownership rights with speed and minimal transaction costs, while the money itself remains in the traditional jurisdiction. The regulatory shields, compliance, and daily liquidity of the underlying fund have not moved a millimeter.
To completely eliminate operational risks, the deal’s architecture was divided among three industry heavyweights. The fund’s physical assets are still held under lock and key by America’s BNY Mellon, the security of digital wallets is guaranteed by the strictly regulated Komainu, and the Licuido platform is responsible for the technical tokenization pipeline.

Naturally, retail investors are barred from entry — access is open exclusively to professional players after a thorough KYC check.
Commenting on the expansion into Web3, Aviva Investors CEO Mark Versey acknowledged that the company intends to take a leading position in this field, since tokenization can optimize internal processes and ultimately “lead to improved client outcomes.”
The global financial sector is right now building the rails for the settlements of the future, which will move away from the limitations of the banking day and switch to 24/7 mode.
For the XRP community, this launch is fundamental proof that institutional investors are choosing XRPL for real, regulated tasks, entering the new digital world strictly by the rules and scaling the network’s potential to the fund’s entire $29 billion.
