What to know:
- Progressive groups criticized Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, citing family crypto ties during CLARITY Act ethics negotiations.
- Senate negotiators seek 60 votes while final CLARITY Act ethics provisions remain unresolved and under discussion.
- Crypto-backed PAC Fairshake reportedly holds $125 million for future election spending, intensifying political scrutiny.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is facing growing criticism from progressive advocacy organizations as negotiations over the CLARITY Act enter a critical stage in the U.S. Senate.
Issues with cryptocurrency regulation have emerged as the largest unresolved issue, with lawmakers from both parties working to secure the 60 necessary votes for further consideration of the bill. The debate reveals general disagreements over cryptocurrency legislation.
According to Axios, progressive organizations like Indivisible, Demand Progress, and Revolving Door Project launched a campaign claiming that Sen. Gillibrand may be in conflict of interest since her family reportedly has ties with the cryptocurrency sector.
In the letter addressed to all Democratic senators, those organizations say that such connections weaken criticism of President Donald Trump’s business expansion in the field and profits.

Ethics Provisions Become Central to CLARITY Act Negotiations
That criticism comes against the backdrop of continuing work by Senate Republicans, White House, and bipartisan negotiators over ethics language in the CLARITY Act. Senators such as Bernie Moreno, Cynthia Lummis, and Thom Tillis are negotiating to reach an agreement.
Sen. Gillibrand argued for stricter ethics regulations, having proposed banning of issuing or sponsoring any digital asset, including memecoins, by elected representatives and their spouses.
Her proposal was presented as a bipartisan measure designed to strengthen public confidence in government oversight. Despite that, progressive organizations insist that such a situation is politically damaging to the Democrats, who criticize the president’s business in the field.
Political Stakes Rise as Crypto Regulation Advances
The dispute underscores how cryptocurrency legislation has become both a regulatory and political battleground. The CLARITY Act seeks to establish a clearer federal framework for digital asset markets, providing greater legal certainty for crypto companies, investors, and regulators.
However, disagreements surrounding ethics rules continue delaying consensus despite bipartisan interest in advancing comprehensive market structure legislation.
Industry influence has also become part of the debate. Crypto-backed political action committee Fairshake reportedly holds approximately $125 million available for future election spending, increasing attention on how digital asset legislation could shape upcoming campaigns.
Supporters argue regulatory clarity would encourage innovation and investment, while critics maintain stronger safeguards are necessary to prevent conflicts involving public officials.
The CLARITY Act previously advanced through the Senate Banking Committee with bipartisan backing from Democratic Senators Ruben Gallego and Angela Alsobrooks, demonstrating cross-party support despite ongoing disagreements. The groups wrote in a letter sent to every Democratic Senate office Tuesday evening.
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, chair of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), is a prime example of a Democratic leader whose conduct undermines efforts to hold the Trump administration accountable for their rampant corruption.
The legislation follows last year’s GENIUS Act, which established federal rules for dollar-backed stablecoins but exposed divisions within the Democratic Party. Senate negotiations will now determine whether revised ethics provisions can secure sufficient bipartisan support for a full floor vote.
