TL;DR

  • VeChain will launch the Interstellar phase of its Renaissance roadmap, focused on expanding the EVM compatibility of VeChainThor.
  • Proposal VIP-255 incorporates improvements from Ethereum’s Cancun, Prague and Osaka versions into a single consensus hardfork.
  • The vote will take place between August 10 and 17, 2026 on the VeVote platform, with validators and StarGate NFT holders participating.

VeChain launches the Interstellar phase of its Renaissance roadmap following the advances introduced by Galactica and Hayabusa. The team presented proposal VIP-255, a hardfork designed to reduce compatibility issues between VeChainThor and the Ethereum ecosystem, incorporating execution improvements from the Cancun, Prague and Osaka versions into a single consensus upgrade.

VIP-255: Improving VeChain Compatibility

The proposal bundles a set of improvements to the smart contract execution environment. Among the new capabilities is transient storage defined by EIP-1153, which allows contracts to maintain a temporary state that is cleared upon execution completion and enables more gas-efficient patterns, such as reentrancy protections and temporary authorizations. The MCOPY instruction, introduced by EIP-5656, simplifies memory copy operations and improves compatibility with modern compilers such as Solidity and Vyper.

On the cryptographic side, EIP-2537 adds native support for operations on the BLS12-381 curve, used in zero-knowledge proof systems, signature aggregation and interoperability protocols. EIP-7951 incorporates native verification of the secp256r1 curve, the foundation for applications using passkeys, FIDO2, WebAuthn and secure hardware such as Apple Secure Enclave. At the protocol level, EIP-2935 allows contracts to query recent block identifiers, while EIP-7825 and EIP-7934 establish gas limits and block size parameters to improve network predictability.

The implementation of VIP-255 respects VeChainThor’s native architecture: transient storage is confined to the individual clauseSELFDESTRUCT rules are evaluated within the same clause and historical queries return native block identifiers. Fee delegation and multi-clause transactions remain unchanged, as does the tokenomics of VET and VTHO.

The voting period will open on August 10, 2026 at 00:00 UTC and close on the 17th of the same month on the VeVote platform. Validators and eligible StarGate NFT holders will be able to participate in the process. If the proposal is approved, the compatible version of the Thor client will be published along with upgrade instructions for node operators, exchanges, custodians and infrastructure providers. Nodes that do not upgrade before the activation block will stop following VeChainThor’s canonical chain.
