  • OFAC also targeted Iranian national Siavash Kayvanpour and crypto wallets and firms allegedly connected to IRGC-linked transactions.
  • Authorities identified millions of dollars in crypto transfers involving Shelbit, IRGC-linked wallets, and other Iranian entities.

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against two cryptocurrency exchanges that belong to the Islamic Republic of Iran, on allegations of facilitating money laundering and helping these individuals evade US sanctions.

This decision has been made by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and it targets two cryptocurrency exchanges, Shelbit and Aban Tether.

The most recent development arises amid continuing hostilities and clashes between the two nations, which have placed strains on Iran’s financial institutions. US officials have found that cryptocurrency exchange platforms have become a major area of focus as they look into the activities of sanctioned firms.

US Treasury Targets Shelbit and Aban Tether

The US Treasury stated that Shelbit and Aban Tether took part in cryptocurrency transfers related to the sanction evasion practices of Iran. OFAC also imposed sanctions on Iranian citizen Siavash Kayvanpour as well as several firms and crypto wallets associated with him.

It was noted by the department that one of the firms associated with Kayvanpour is Shelbit. The US authorities claim that such networks assisted in transferring the digital assets from Iranian entities and IRGC-linked wallets.

According to Scott Bessent, the Secretary of the Treasury, the United States Government would not stop targeting such networks which provide financial support to Iran’s economy.

“We are going after illicit financial networks in dollars, rials or cryptocurrencies that sustain the Iranian regime,” stated Scott Bessent.

This quotation clearly proves that US officials regard cryptocurrency as one more key sphere for financial law enforcement, especially when digital money is used to circumvent restrictions put on banks and other financial organizations.

Millions of Dollars in Crypto Transfers

Millions of dollars were also identified by the US Treasury in crypto transactions related to sanctioned addresses. OFAC claims that wallets owned by IRGC have sent more than $1 million to wallets associated with Shelbit, while wallets associated with Kayvanpour have sent close to $2 million to Nobitex.

According to OFAC, Shelbit helped transfer around $2 million worth of cryptocurrency to IRGC wallets. This is an example of how Iranian cryptocurrency exchanges can transfer money between the various organizations. It is easy to transfer funds using cryptocurrency, but the blockchain technology is open to inspection.

US Treasury Expands Pressure on Iranian Crypto Networks

These sanctions are part of a wider US strategy, which is being led by the US Treasury, to block Iran’s access to international financial systems.

The US Treasury sanctioned the crypto exchanges Zedcex and Zedxio in January, while the US authorities froze $131 million in cryptocurrency associated with Iran in June.

Shelbit, Aban Tether, and Kayvanpour fall under the latest series of sanctions imposed on exchange companies, wallets, and entities that may be used by sanctioned Iranians.

The entire crypto industry is under increased regulatory scrutiny as digital asset exchanges in the sanctioned nations must monitor any suspicious activities and block the sanctioned entities. It is important to note that the United States Treasury has explicitly stated that crypto transactions would continue to be of utmost importance to disrupt Iran’s financial network and others.
