Bitcoin Knots drew criticism from David Schwartz on August 11 after the project said Bitcoin was under attack. Ripple’s former technology chief rejected the warning. He questioned whether it misled readers who lacked the context.
The conflict is based on BIP-110, which implemented mandatory signaling since block 961,632. Nodes using BIP-110’s rules broke off from the main Bitcoin chain. These nodes generated blocks 961,632 and block 961,633 before stalling, and the BIP repository marked the proposal as closed.

How Low Hash Power Stalled the BIP-110 Branch
The BIP-110 dashboard at OCEAN showed the latest block to be 961,633 on Tuesday. This had been almost 59 hours since this block was mined. The endpoint displayed several exahashes per second of mining power, but a third block had not appeared.
This had resulted from lack of consensus about this change in Bitcoin. Only 51 out of 2,016 Bitcoin blocks had been signaling for BIP-110, and that accounted for only 2.53%. It was much below the 55% threshold required by the plan.
The chain of the majority fork kept producing new blocks after the fork, while the BIP-110 fork kept mining at the same difficulty but with a much lower hash rate. Therefore, the pace of block generation decreased, and its recorded height did not increase.
Bitcoin Knots said the network was under attack and discouraged users from downgrading or changing their software because of the risk of getting false confirmations through blocks that were considered invalid according to their protocol rules.
Why Bitcoin Knots Plans a New Proof-of-Work Algorithm
Despite being closed on the BIP record, Bitcoin Knots mentioned the possibility of altering the process of mining for this branch. The new proof-of-work selection was set to be done at 14:00 UTC on August 11.
According to Bitcoin Knots, there will be a deterministic random process within its Discord strategy channel. This planned selection had not taken place at the time of the publication. No announcements of any other algorithm apart from the initial BIP-110, which was still closed.
The implementation of a different algorithm will open up another route for the minority network branch. The network branch will be forced to adopt an algorithm that is different from Bitcoin’s current proof-of-work algorithm that is based on SHA-256.
What Dashjr’s Removal Means for the BIP-110 Dispute
The Bitcoin Knots controversy also impacted Bitcoin governance, as, on August 10th, Jon Atack incorporated a GitHub pull request to delete Luke Dashjr from the list of BIP editors. This was done due to Mark Erhardt’s concerns regarding his involvement with BIP-110.
According to Atack, Dashjr had been deprived of editor and administrative rights before the list was modified. Dashjr denied this and termed it as power abuse.
Bitcoin Knots had not released any new mining algorithm, and according to OCEAN, the Bitcoin Knots branch had stagnated at block 961,633.
