Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s blockbuster Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to defy estimates with another record weekend cume, topping $2 billion on just its third weekend of theatrical release.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day – By The Numbers
Ahead of its second weekend, Spider-Man: Brand New Day already appeared poised to eventually top $2 billion, but that was a “by the end of its run” estimate made after less than a full week in theaters and before its second weekend. Now, after 17 days, that milestone has already fallen.
Penned by scribes Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Brand New Day will inevitably top Avengers: Infinity War’s $2.05 billion and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ $2.07 billion in the next few days to claim the #6 spot on the all-time global box office charts. The MCU sequel is already the #4 film on the all-time domestic charts, beating Avatar after today’s receipts are all tallied. This means Spidey’s sequel has now bested all but one Avengers movie – Endgame.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day should have no trouble passing the stateside hauls of its predecessor Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame by the end of its theatrical run, which would put it at #2 on domestic charts, behind only Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which sits atop the North American lifetime box office with a staggering $936.6 million.
While it looks like Spidey’s got enough fuel left in the tank to make a run at The Force Awakens’ crown, I’ll wait one more weekend before committing to that as seeming inevitable too.
It now appears likely Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit $2.3 billion in total global box office by the end of its run, and could obviously go higher depending on just how well it continues to hold in coming weeks. Higher end puts it toward $2.4 billion, and lower end is still north of $2.25 billion. And I am confident it will finish north of both Titanic and Ne Zah 2, for at least a fourth place all-time worldwide result.
If I’m right, then Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a chance to unseat Avatar: The Way of Water and its $2.33 billion from third place. It’s unlikely, however, that Brand New Day can get close to either Avengers: Endgame’s $2.8 billion or Avatar’s $2.9 billion chart-topping totals. Perhaps some future rereleases will help propel Spidey closer to those top-2 global leaders, but even that would take a few overperforming theatrical encores to have a realistic shot. And of course, it depends on those other two films not getting rereleases that raise their own totals.
Sony and Marvel are of course more than happy with Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s remarkable $2 billion performance to date, and will be equally pleased with an eventual finish somewhere in the vicinity above or just a hair below $2.3 billion. Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday tickets went on sale this weekend (amid Disney’s D23 event, at which Marvel also revealed the cast of the upcoming X-Men reboot and released a new Doomsday trailer) and all signs point to a Christmas season opening weekend likely to overshadow Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s dramatic record-setting debut, and thus in turn probably top Spidey’s grand total as well.
