Shares of SpaceX gained roughly 2% to settle at $137.95 on Tuesday following the company’s revelation of plans to construct a $100 billion launch facility in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.

The complex, designated as Starbase Louisiana, will occupy 125,000 acres on property formerly owned by Exxon.
According to SpaceX, the location will contain five separate launch complexes, with each complex housing two individual launchpads. Additional infrastructure includes fuel manufacturing and storage facilities, power generation systems, vehicle processing buildings, and deep-water shipping ports. Residential developments and potentially an airport are also under consideration.
The company anticipates breaking ground in 2027. The inaugural launch from the facility is projected for 2029.
The disclosure arrived through a coordinated statement issued by SpaceX and Louisiana’s Economic Development office. Governor Jeff Landry characterized the initiative as a significant benefit for regional families and surrounding communities.
SpaceX indicated the development will generate 3,000 direct employment opportunities throughout Louisiana during a 10-year period. State officials project an additional 8,100 indirect positions will emerge as a result.
In a video message published on the company’s official website, Elon Musk stated that SpaceX would deliver “probably 10,000 really exciting jobs” to the state of Louisiana.
Implications for Starship Operations
The Louisiana facility will function as the principal launch site for Starship, SpaceX’s next-generation rocket system and the most massive launch vehicle ever constructed. The vehicle is engineered for complete reusability.
Starship has yet to complete a commercial flight. The $100 billion figure represents a staged investment distributed over multiple years, rather than an immediate capital deployment.
SpaceX has already demonstrated substantial capital deployment. During the first six months of 2026, the company allocated $28.5 billion toward capital expenditures, with significant portions directed to computing infrastructure supporting its AI division, SpaceXAI.
The company’s revenue performance remains robust. SpaceX recorded $7.8 billion in revenue during Q2 2026, representing a 92% increase compared to the prior year. The Starlink satellite internet service doubled its active user base to 12 million subscribers within a 12-month span.
Environmental Considerations Emerge
The proposed location encompasses delicate coastal wetland ecosystems. SpaceX has committed to preserving certain areas in their natural state and collaborating with state regulatory agencies on habitat conservation efforts.
The company’s environmental track record contains complications. In 2024, SpaceX was determined to have breached Clean Water Act regulations at its Texas launch operations. The company also encountered criticism regarding wildlife habitat destruction following Starship’s maiden test flight in April 2023.
Louisiana legislators enacted legislation earlier this calendar year establishing felony penalties for unauthorized spaceport access, while simultaneously providing financial incentives for aerospace corporations. Governor Landry approved these measures, which took effect in May.
SpaceX has pledged to collaborate with Louisiana authorities on “historic coastal restoration” initiatives aimed at safeguarding wetlands surrounding the new facility.
The Louisiana site represents SpaceX’s fourth launch location. The company has previously established operations in Texas, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
SpaceX currently commands approximately 82% of global commercial launch market share, based on data from Motley Fool Research.
