AI firm OpenAI has announced plans to end its partnership with Cursor after SpaceX acquired the AI coding startup. The firm will shut down access to its models later this year as part of the move to end the partnership, a decision they said relates to Elon Musk’s companies.

OpenAI to End Partnership With Cursor By November

In a company release, the AI firm revealed that it had notified SpaceX of its intention to wind down the contract providing OpenAI models to Cursor, with a proposed shutoff date of November 12. “To maximize the time that developers can retain access to our models through Cursor, we are giving the maximum notice provided by our contract,” the release read.

OpenAI described the decision as “incredibly tough,” as they care deeply about developers having access to their models. However, they explained that they are making this choice because they cannot be confident SpaceX will use their technology under their terms of service, given the experience of Elon Musk’s companies violating contracts.

This move comes just over two weeks after SpaceX completed the acquisition of the Cursor AI startup. Notably, Cursor now works closely with SpaceXAI, the creator of Grok, which directly competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The decision again draws attention to the rift between Sam Altman and Elon Musk, which has also involved legal battles. A jury had earlier this year dismissed Musk’s lawsuit against Altman, ruling that the case was filed after the legal time limit.

Musk Responds To The Decision

In an X post, Musk said that he couldn’t care less about OpenAI’s decision to end its partnership with Cursor AI. “Scam Altman and Greg Stockman are utterly untrustworthy assholes who stole an open source nonprofit,” he said.

Cursor’s co-founder Michael Truell noted that OpenAI models serve about 5% of their user traffic and that they are speaking with the AI firm to resolve this. “Cursor was one of the very first users of OpenAI, we’ve worked closely with their team for years, and we’ve trusted their platform to be neutral infrastructure for our business,” he added.
