‘Camp Rock 3’ Scores The Series Another Hit — But The Franchise Flags

There was a period of time when Disney Channel original movies reached far beyond the network’s regular demographic and became defining moments in pop culture. A handful of titles drew massive viewership numbers and also produced albums and songs that did incredibly well on the Billboard charts. High School Musical is perhaps the best remembered and biggest of that cadre, but it was not the only Disney Channel franchise that overperformed.

The Camp Rock series was immediately another massive win from the moment it hit the small screen, and the project helped turn both the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato into even greater stars more than a decade and a half ago. Camp Rock arrived in 2008, and a sequel quickly followed two years later.

The third installment did not premiere on Disney Channel until earlier this month, when Camp Rock 3 premiered on the traditional network before launching on Disney+ a day later. As was the case with the first two films, Camp Rock 3 came with a carefully constructed pop-rock soundtrack, one which helps introduce several new stars – and the Jonas Brothers even perform the opening number as their fictional group Connect 3. The new soundtrack only manages to reach a single Billboard tally this frame as it underperforms when compared to its predecessors.

Camp Rock 3 Debuts Inside the Top 10

Camp Rock 3 debuts at No. 9 on Billboard’s Soundtracks chart, becoming a quick top 10 hit. The tally looks only at the most-consumed soundtrack albums in the United States, with performance and placement determined by the sales and streaming activity generated by the project – and their individual tunes – during each tracking period.

Camp Rock 3 Falls Short of the First Two Films

All three Camp Rock projects have reached Billboard’s Soundtracks chart. The first two spent time at No. 1, so Camp Rock 3 is the first installment in the franchise to fail to run the show. Coincidentally, Camp Rock and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam also peaked in the same position on the Billboard 200, as the two stalled at No. 3.

Camp Rock 3, meanwhile, misses not only the Billboard 200 – the ranking of the most-consumed albums and EPs in the nation – but also both the Top Album Sales and Top Streaming Albums charts. The Billboard 200 is built each week using both sales and streaming activity, but the newly-released soundtrack did not perform well enough in either arena to reach the main roster or either of the two more specific lists.

Only Two Soundtracks Debut This Week

Camp Rock 3 is one of only two debuts on this week’s Soundtracks chart. Helluva Boss: Season 2 arrives at No. 18. At the same time, Frozen: The Songs returns to the ranking at No. 6. It is the sole comeback this period. Somewhat surprisingly, despite the enormous popularity of the Frozen franchise and the success of “Let It Go,” that compilation never reached No. 1 on the Soundtracks tally. Instead, it stalled one rung short of the throne, at No. 2.
