A busy Week 25 schedule presents some interesting fantasy baseball opportunities on the waiver wire. There are some hitters who have favorable matchups, as well as pitchers who could thrive in ideal circumstances. Let’s focus on five players to consider adding who are still available in the majority of Yahoo leagues.
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Targets For Week 25
Mason Montgomery, RP, Pittsburgh Pirates (34% rostered)
Gregory Soto has closed games for the Pirates at times this season. The team also added Luke Weaver at the trade deadline after he thrived with the Mets. However, despite the presence of those two, Montgomery has been the one that they have called upon lately in the ninth inning. He has converted all six of his save opportunities over the last month, while also posting two victories during that span. He did not give up a single run over those 13 appearances and now has a 1.06 WHIP for the season. There’s no reason to believe that he won’t continue to close games down the stretch.
Ty France, 1B, San Diego Padres (30% rostered)
France is having the best season of his career, batting .292 with a .375 wOBA. He has already tied his career high with 20 home runs on his way to a .512 slugging percentage. One of the main reasons for his increased production is his career high 9.5% barrel rate. The Padres begin Week 25 with three home games against the Nationals, who have the second-highest xERA (4.81) in baseball. He will then face the Giants, who have also pitched poorly with their 4.23 xERA. This is a great opportunity for France to remain hot at the plate.
Dominic Canzone, OF, Seattle Mariners (22% rostered)
Canzone has done his best to help the Mariners make a push for a playoff spot. Over his last 22 games, he is 25-for-89 (.281) with a .354 OBP and 14 RBI. It has been the continuation of a productive campaign that has seen him record a .230 ISO and a .351 wOBA. After three games against the Rangers to begin Week 25, the Mariners will then play three games at the Athletics’ hitter-friendly home park. Looking beyond next week, the Mariners then play three games at the Angels and three games at the Rockies. The Angels have the 10th-highest WHIP (1.35) in the majors and facing the Rockies at Coors Field is about as good as it gets for hitters. Canzone is someone to consider adding for at least the next couple of weeks.
Mickey Gasper, C/1B, Boston Red Sox (20% rostered)
There have been several unlikely contributors on the way to the Red Sox being one of the hottest teams in baseball. The latest is Gasper, who is currently filling in for Willson Contreras (hamstring) at first base. Across his last 15 games, Gasper is 15-for-41 (.366) with seven home runs, 14 RBI, 10 runs scored, and a .519 OBP. Although that’s likely not sustainable, he did have a 1.020 OPS at Triple-A this year. The Red Sox begin Week 25 with a three-game series at home against the Angels and the aforementioned struggling pitching staff. They then play three games at Fenway Park against the Royals, who have the fourth-highest WHIP (1.39) in baseball. It’s worth adding Gasper and trying to ride out his hot streak for at least next week.
Kumar Rocker, SP, Texas Rangers (11% rostered)
Rocker is coming off an odd start against the Brewers in which he posted seven strikeouts over three innings. However, it took him 86 pitches to get through three innings because he issued four walks and allowed four hits. The good news is that he has 50 strikeouts over his last 45 1/3 innings. That’s noteworthy because he is lined up to start against the Mariners next week. Not only have they scored the fewest runs in baseball, but they have the seventh-highest strikeout rate. Rocker is worth taking a chance on in 12-team and deeper leagues.
