Is the altcoin season finally here? 70% of coins have reclaimed their 200-day average as Bitcoin hovers near $82K.

Altcoin momentum is strengthening as 70% of altcoins reclaim their 200-day moving average on Binance.

Total3, which tracks altcoin market capitalization excluding Ethereum, also moved above $800 billion. The level had not been seen for more than eight months.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin hovers about $75,600 and $82,000, creating room for capital rotation into higher-beta assets.

Altcoins Reclaim the 200-Day Average

Darkfost said the latest move marks a structural break above May’s high. Total3 also recorded a strong daily close above the $800 billion threshold.

The 200-day moving average is used to assess if an asset stays in a bullish or bearish trend in the long term. The latest breadth data shows a major shift across the altcoin market. Around 70% of altcoins on Binance now trade above this average.

That figure contrasts sharply with the previous bearish period. Altcoins remained 65% to 85% below their 200-day averages for nearly one year.

Bitcoin’s current consolidation may help explain the changing market leadership. Darkfost noted that BTC’s range is encouraging trading volume to rotate toward altcoins.

Binance data puts Bitcoin dominance at 53%, according to Darkfost. However, CoinMarketCap reports broader BTC dominance at 58.69%, up 0.15 points over the day.

Bitcoin Price Action Mirrors the 2022 Market Structure

Michaël van de Poppe compared September 2026 Bitcoin price action with late 2022 and early 2023. His comparison points to a consolidation phase followed by another potential Bitcoin advance.

Van de Poppe said Bitcoin could move toward $100,000 before stalling. He then expects altcoins to become the stronger performers within that market structure.

Analyst Max also identified similarities between the current cycle and Bitcoin’s 2022 price action. He said BTC could first move toward $83,000 before experiencing another larger pullback.

Max outlined a potential sequence around the $82,800 higher-timeframe high. In his analysis, rejection there could produce a pullback toward the $69,000 2022 all-time high.

A subsequent recovery toward $90,000-$95,000 would represent another potential swing-trading setup. These levels remain analyst scenarios rather than confirmed future price movements.

Altcoin Season Index Shows a Market in Transition

CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index currently reads 48/100, placing the market in neutral territory. The reading increased 6.67% over 24 hours, suggesting stronger relative altcoin momentum.

Recent gains have also concentrated around specific narratives. Privacy coin ZEC and Layer-1 tokens AR and SYN recorded roughly 31% to 148% daily gains.

Those moves exceeded typical Bitcoin price changes during the same period. Sector-specific trading activity and volume spikes accompanied the gains.

Broader market conditions also remain supportive. Total crypto market capitalization increased 4.02%, while daily Bitcoin ETF purchases reached $433 million.

The data therefore shows improving altcoin breadth without confirming a definitive altcoin season. The key mechanism is Bitcoin consolidation, broader market strength, and increasing participation above the 200-day average.

For traders and investors, the 70% threshold provides a measurable signal of improving market breadth. However, the analysts cited here also stress that relative performance can change quickly as Bitcoin resumes its next major move.
