The Blockchain Association is one of the crypto industry’s main advocacy groups in Washington. It represents companies and interests across the digital asset space.
Kristin Smith will take over as interim CEO once Mersinger departs. Smith previously led the organization from its founding in 2018 until about 15 months ago.
Who Is Taking Over
Smith left the Blockchain Association last year. She became president of a newer group called the Solana Policy Institute.
She kept her position as board president at the Blockchain Association even after leaving the CEO role. Now she will run both organizations at once during this interim period.
A spokesman for the group confirmed Smith will keep her job at the Solana Policy Institute while serving as interim CEO of the Blockchain Association.
Mersinger joined the Blockchain Association in June 2025. Before that, she served as a commissioner at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.
She left the CFTC three years before her second term was set to end. She stepped into the advocacy role shortly afterward.
Timing Tied to Legislative Defeat
The leadership change comes about a week after a setback for the crypto industry in Congress. The Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act.
The bill needed support to clear a cloture motion. It did not get enough votes from Democrats or Republicans to move forward.
Many observers now expect the legislation will not be revisited until 2027. The Blockchain Association had pushed lawmakers to support the bill throughout the process.
In her departure statement, Mersinger did not mention the Clarity Act. Instead, she pointed to other achievements during her time at the organization.
She cited her work on the GENIUS Act, a law tied to stablecoin regulation. She also mentioned progress on regulatory clarity at the Securities and Exchange Commission and the CFTC.
“I came here from the CFTC because I believed this industry deserved clear rules of the road and a credible, unified voice making the case for them in Washington,” Mersinger said.
Smith said Mersinger led the group through what she called the most consequential period in crypto policy history. That period included the passage of the GENIUS Act as the first major U.S. crypto law.
The Blockchain Association has not responded to questions about Mersinger’s plans after her departure. It is unclear what she will do once she leaves the organization at the end of the year.
The handover to Smith is set for October 16, 2026. Her time as CEO will be interim, meaning the group may search for a permanent replacement afterward.
