  • The Information reported on Sunday, US time, that Anthropic has an unannounced multiyear cloud services deal with Nasdaq-listed IREN.
  • Neither company has confirmed the agreement, and the report gave no value or duration.
  • IREN signed a multiyear contract with a leading frontier AI lab in August but has not named the customer.

Australian-founded IREN has signed a multiyear AI cloud services deal with Anthropic, The Information reported on Sunday, US time, citing people familiar with the relationship.

Neither company has confirmed the deal, and the report gave no value or exact length for it. IREN has filed nothing about the deal with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to The Information, the arrangement lets Anthropic lock in large clusters of GPUs with more flexibility and at lower cost. The publication said it also helps keep computing shortages from holding back Anthropic’s growth before and after its anticipated initial public offering.

The Information put Anthropic’s data centre commitments at about US$530 billion (AU$757.9 billion). It said that build-out increasingly depends on current and former Bitcoin miners, naming Hut 8, TeraWulf, IREN and Nscale.

TeraWulf, one of those miners, agreed to a 20-year Anthropic lease worth about US$19 billion (AU$27.17 billion) in July. Riot Platforms followed in August, agreeing to supply 191 megawatts from its Texas campus to Anthropic.

IREN announced a new multiyear AI cloud contract with a leading frontier AI lab on 27 August, alongside its 2026 financial year results. That release named other recent customers, including Cohere, Perplexity and Figure AI.

Co-founder and co-chief executive Daniel Roberts told analysts that day the company could not yet disclose the lab’s name. He said the contract was separate from Prometheus, the AI developer IREN had left unnamed in a July announcement.

Mining Gives Way to AI Cloud

IREN was incorporated in New South Wales in 2018 as Iris Energy and listed on Nasdaq in 2021. Its head office is in Sydney, and its development pipeline includes an 800-megawatt site at Bundey in South Australia.

AI cloud services brought in US$70.5 million (AU$100.81 million) in the June quarter, ahead of US$66.7 million (AU$95.38 million) from Bitcoin mining. In the year to 30 June, AI cloud revenue rose to US$128.8 million (AU$184.18 million) from US$16.4 million (AU$23.45 million).

The shift came with US$638.8 million (AU$913.48 million) in non-cash impairments, mainly from retiring mining hardware as sites convert to AI work.

IREN’s annual report warns that its AI cloud business has significant customer concentration. It also flags water and grid-connection risks for its Australian operations, including Bundey.
