Application Expansion
Soneium, the Sony-backed blockchain network focused on the digital entertainment economy, announced Oct. 26 that it is transitioning to an onchain ecosystem centered on tokenized intellectual property and a native token. The network’s updated roadmap outlines a framework designed to enable creators, studios and fans to participate in the economic lifecycle of entertainment assets through programmable ownership, licensing and revenue distribution.
According to Soneium, the ecosystem currently supports more than 250 applications spanning music, gaming, anime, film, collectibles and fan creations. The platform aims to provide creators with alternative funding mechanisms while offering IP holders automated royalty distribution and clear licensing terms amid the growth of artificial intelligence-assisted content creation.
“Entertainment starts with creators,” said Yuji Kumagai, head of Soneium Protocol. “Today, Soneium enters a new stage built to stand behind them. We will help them fund their next work at a new scale, try new forms of expression and find fresh ways to connect with fans.”
Central to the initiative is “Tokenized IP,” which represents the future economic value of creative projects on-chain. These digital assets can take the form of nonfungible collectibles for fan engagement or fungible tokens designed to circulate as primary currencies within specific IP economies, both featuring automated revenue-splitting capabilities.
The initial rollout of the model features Moriusa, a popular character IP from Tokyo-based entertainment firm Super State Holdings. The integration will support merchandise, animated short series and broader licensing ventures.
Financial Products and Open Standards
Beyond individual character tokens, Soneium plans to introduce broader financial instruments, including financial products offering indirect exposure to entertainment portfolios. It will also launch bond instruments backed by entertainment revenues, including a partnership with K-pop enterprise Dayonedream to tokenize live concert royalty streams.
To support cross-platform licensing and autonomous discovery, Soneium is adopting ERC-8432, which provides machine-readable licensing interfaces that allow human operators and autonomous AI agents to verify and settle rights agreements without platform lock-in.
The native Soneium token will serve as the economic layer across the network, designed to align incentives among creators, rights holders, developers and users. Soneium stated that details regarding the token generation event schedule will be released at a later date.
User access to the ecosystem will be funneled through the Soneium portal and the Startale app.
