In a recent X post, the on-chain intelligence platform Arkham posed a question about what it thinks could be Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto‘s most underrated innovation: the UTXO model. While Bitcoin’s architecture gets a lot of attention, UTXO, the accounting system that makes it function at the transaction level, rarely gets the same interest outside technical circles.
“Is this Satoshi’s most underrated innovation?” Arkham asked in its X post, noting that “Litecoin, Dogecoin and Zcash all run the accounting model Satoshi designed for Bitcoin.”
The UTXO model, though pioneered by Bitcoin, has been adopted by several other major blockchains. Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Zcash, and Dash all retain the UTXO model, having forked from Bitcoin’s codebase. Cardano uses a modified version known as the Extended UTXO (eUTXO) model, which adds programmability for smart contracts while keeping the core UTXO accounting structure intact.
UTXO is the accounting method that tracks available funds as discrete, spendable units rather than account totals and was designed to solve the double-spending problem, Bitcoin’s core technical challenge, by making every coin traceable back to its source without requiring a central authority.
Satoshi Nakamoto’s most underrated innovation?
In a report, Arkham sheds light on the UTXO model as well as Satoshi Nakamoto’s comments on it.
Arkham observed that, despite the fact that UTXO is crucial to the Bitcoin architecture, the phrase does not appear in the Bitcoin whitepaper, which was published on October 31, 2008. The phrase itself was never coined by Satoshi but rather emerged later among developers between 2011 and 2012 as shorthand for the concept described in the whitepaper.
Section 9, titled “Combining and Splitting Value,” provides the clearest articulation. According to Satoshi, rather than handling every coin individually, transactions should be able to carry several inputs and outputs at once, with one output for the payment and one returning change to the sender. This represents an accurate description of how UTXOs work in practice.
But Satoshi did hint at UTXOs indirectly in Section 7, “Reclaiming Disk Space.”
