Bitcoin vs Gold: Why BTC’s 42% Q3 rally leaves Q4 hedge thesis unfinished

If the Q3 pattern repeats, Q4 could be a cakewalk for Bitcoin.

Here’s the logic: Q3 was a period of high FUD as tensions between the U.S. and Iran rose, causing oil prices to rise by almost 40%. However, during the same period, Bitcoin rose by 42%, creating a major market divergence.

Typically, rising oil prices move against BTC; however, that correlation broke down in Q3. This shift could be a key indicator for Bitcoin’s Q4 setup.

From a sentiment perspective, this divergence supports Bitcoin’s macro-hedge thesis. As shown in the chart below, the BTC/XAU ratio rose by over 37% in Q3, marking its largest quarterly rise since Q4 2024.

Essentially, macro FUD drove capital rotation from gold into Bitcoin, breaking away from the usual safe-haven flows seen during risk-off periods.

Can Bitcoin repeat its Q3 rally?

Keeping this in mind, next week could see a repeat of the Q3 setup.

As the U.S. mid-term elections approach, major earnings reports are due and macro-level FUD remains a factor, Bitcoin’s macro hedge story will be put to the test again.

So, if the divergence seen in Q3 occurs again, it can set up another rally for BTC. This will be further compounded by the Fed injecting $1.827 billion into the markets next week.

Notably, smart money looks like it is already positioning around this momentum.

According to Darkfost, with Bitcoin [BTC] holding around $80k, retail inflows have nearly doubled from $5.5 billion to $10.75 billion.

On the flip side, whale inflows to Binance have been declining, dropping from $5.9 billion at the end of August to $3.8 billion. This indicates that retail investors are increasingly moving their BTC onto exchanges, possibly in preparation to sell, whilst whales are not in a rush to move their coins.

Bitcoin’s macro-hedge thesis faces a critical test

Zoom out, and the whole Bitcoin-versus-gold thesis starts looking shaky.

As identified by Charlie Bilello, Creative Planning Chief Market Strategist, Bitcoin (-7.3%) and gold (-7.5%) have been the two worst-performing major assets this year. So, despite BTC’s outperformance vs gold in Q3, the overall trend indicates that both assets are struggling to live up to their defensive appeal.

This puts Bitcoin’s Q4 setup under the spotlight. If the Q3-style divergence fails to repeat despite the ongoing macro FUD, Bitcoin’s growing macro hedge narrative could start to crack, suggesting that the rotation from gold into Bitcoin was more of a short-term play than a sustained shift in market positioning.

In this context, next week could set the tone for how this rotation plays out through the rest of Q4.

Interestingly, Bitcoin is rebounding against the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) with the U.S. Treasuries easing. With yields falling, this could take some pressure away from risk assets, which would mean BTC can continue to ride its recent momentum. This would cause Bitcoin to once again break away from macro headwinds, continuing the divergence seen during Q3, providing further momentum for its macro hedge narrative.

For now, the setup leans toward a potential repeat of the Q3 divergence, with next week likely to be a key test of whether Bitcoin can “sustain” this relative strength.

Final Summary

  • Bitcoin could rally again in Q4 if the Q3 pattern repeats despite rising macro uncertainty.

  • If BTC fails to outperform gold again, its macro-hedge narrative could weaken.
