France Records Growing Crypto Kidnappings Trend

In early 2026, France has registered approximately 41 incidents related to crypto kidnappings. This figure has a steep rise as opposed to the previous periods. The events are distributed in various areas.

Cases of crypto kidnappings have been reported to be on the increase. France is experiencing an incidence rate of a case after every 2.5 days. This indicates a regular trend, not just one-off events.

The trend is illustrated in several cases. In January 2025, one of the founders of Ledger was kidnapped during a ransom demand. In May 2025, a daughter of a crypto CEO was attacked in Paris.

In May 2025, another case was reported of a family member of a crypto investor. The intruders were ransoming digital currency. Several wrench attacks have been reported in 2026 as well.

Such wrench attacks include threats to impose transfers. The victims are coerced into giving money within a short time. This approach has been increasing in crypto kidnappings.

Durov also mentioned a 2025 case of a former tax official. Ghalia C. was arrested because of selling investor information. Criminal groups were reportedly using the information.

Exposed Data Drives Crypto Kidnappings in France

According to him, such leaks pose more risks to crypto holders. When data has been exposed, high-value targets are easier to discover. This brings up issues of individual security.

High-profile cases have contributed to the fear. David Balland and his wife were kidnapped in France in 2025. The case was of extreme violence when attempting a ransom.

Another incident took place in Burgundy. The family of a crypto entrepreneur was kidnapped on the condition of payment of 400,000 euros. A home invasion in Ploudalmezeau had left a few individuals as hostages.

The French officials have affirmed that they are still investigating these crimes. Cases related to organized groups have been arrested. There are networks that are said to cross borders.

According to the officials, the protection of investors has gained a priority. Plans are under consideration to solve the increase in crypto kidnappings. There is still related activity being monitored by law enforcement.

Durov condemned the wider availability of personal information. He claimed that it can add risks instead of decreasing them. He also said Telegram may exit France due to privacy issues.
