OpenAI has unveiled the inaugural ChatGPT Futures Class of 2026, a program spotlighting 26 student innovators leveraging AI to address real-world challenges. These students, representing over 20 universities across North America and Europe, will each receive a $10,000 grant, access to advanced AI tools, and mentorship from OpenAI to further their projects.

The Class of 2026 is unique: they’re the first cohort to navigate their entire college journey with ChatGPT, which launched publicly in late 2022. According to OpenAI, this group has already integrated AI into their academic and personal pursuits, using it not to circumvent effort, but to expand what’s possible. From creating mental health resources for underserved communities to developing accessibility tools for disabled peers, their work exemplifies AI’s potential as an amplifier of ambition.

“I never thought the gap between noticing a problem and building something real could get this small,” said Kyle Scenna, a 24-year-old honoree from the University of Waterloo. OpenAI notes that these students epitomize a growing shift: they’re not waiting for advanced degrees, funding, or institutional approval to tackle problems. Instead, they’re using AI as a catalyst for immediate action and meaningful contributions.

A Competitive Landscape for AI Talent

This program arrives as demand for generative AI expertise intensifies. Recent projections suggest nearly 40% of core job skills could change by 2030 due to AI advancements, underscoring the need to prepare students now.
