Alphabet (GOOGL) stock rose about 2% Monday as Google opened pre-orders for Googlebook, a new premium laptop category built around Gemini AI. The launch gives Google another way to bring Gemini directly into consumer hardware while expanding beyond the traditional Chromebook market.

Googlebook starts at $899, with initial models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. The devices will use Intel or Qualcomm processors and offer up to 14 hours of battery life.

The first Googlebooks are scheduled to reach U.S. customers on Oct. 4. Google says the category is designed primarily for Android users who regularly move between their smartphones and laptops.

The launch marks Google’s latest attempt to establish a premium laptop platform after Pixelbook in 2017 and Pixelbook Go in 2019. Unlike lower-priced Chromebooks, Googlebook is aimed more directly at users willing to pay for stronger hardware and deeper AI features.

Gemini Moves Directly Into the Laptop

Googlebook is built on the Android technology stack combined with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. That allows Android apps, web apps and Linux tools to run while maintaining close integration with Android phones.

One of the main AI features is Magic Pointer. Users can move the cursor over text or images and ask Gemini for help without first copying the content into a separate chatbot window.

Gemini can also assist with drafting, organizing text and answering questions about content already displayed on the screen. Google says users will be able to continue tasks started on an Android phone when they switch to their Googlebook.

The devices will also include dedicated AI processing hardware with NPUs capable of more than 45 TOPS. Googlebook models can feature touchscreens, OLED displays, haptic trackpads and premium materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber.

Google is also bundling 12 months of Google AI Pro with each Googlebook. That includes Gemini Advanced and 5TB of cloud storage.

Google Takes Aim at Premium Laptops

The new category increases competition with Apple and Windows laptop makers. Apple recently introduced its $699 MacBook Neo, giving consumers another lower-cost route into a premium laptop ecosystem.

Google says Googlebook will exist alongside Chromebooks rather than replace them. Chromebooks will continue targeting schools, businesses and lower-cost customers, while Googlebook focuses more heavily on premium hardware and Android integration.

The strategy also gives Google another distribution channel for Gemini. If users adopt Googlebook, Alphabet could deepen engagement with its AI tools across search, productivity, cloud storage and Android.

There is still an investor caveat. Google has not disclosed sales targets or expected financial contribution from Googlebook, and the premium laptop market is already highly competitive.

Google also depends heavily on hardware partners rather than controlling the entire product stack itself. That could make it harder to create a consistent premium experience across every model.

For Monday, however, the launch gives Alphabet another visible consumer AI product. Googlebook pre-orders are now open from $899, with the first devices arriving in U.S. stores on Oct. 4.
