TLDR
- Amazon stock rose about 2% Monday as the company detailed a wider rollout of AI-powered smart glasses for delivery drivers.
- Amazon plans to deploy about 5,000 smart glasses this year and more than 20,000 by the end of 2027.
- The glasses provide navigation, package information and safety alerts directly in drivers’ field of view.
- More than 500 drivers have tested the technology across over 275,000 deliveries.
- Amazon is also investing another $1.9 billion in its Delivery Service Partner program in 2027.
Amazon (AMZN) stock rose about 2% Monday as the company detailed plans to expand its use of AI-powered smart glasses for delivery drivers. The technology is part of Amazon’s ongoing effort to make its last-mile delivery network faster, safer and more efficient.
The glasses place navigation and delivery instructions directly in a driver’s field of view. That reduces the need to repeatedly check a smartphone while locating packages or walking toward a customer’s address.
Amazon says the devices use artificial intelligence, computer vision and cameras to help drivers complete deliveries. More than 500 delivery drivers have tested the system over the past 18 months across more than 275,000 deliveries.
$AMZN is scaling its AI delivery glasses with more than 20,000 expected in the field by the end of 2027.

The company now plans to increase deployment considerably. Around 5,000 devices are expected to be rolled out this year, rising to more than 20,000 by the end of 2027.
Amazon Expands AI Across Last-Mile Delivery
The glasses activate after a driver safely parks at a delivery location. They can identify the correct package and provide walking directions to the customer’s door, including through apartment complexes and other difficult locations.
Amazon is also adding safety functions to the devices. The glasses can warn drivers about animals and help detect when a package may have been left at the wrong address.
Use of the glasses is voluntary for delivery drivers. Amazon said hundreds of drivers contributed feedback on areas including comfort and display clarity during development.
The technology is part of a broader push to improve Amazon’s Delivery Service Partner network. The company said Monday that it plans to invest another $1.9 billion in the program during 2027.
Amazon expects part of that money to help delivery partners raise driver pay. It estimates national average earnings will increase by roughly another $1 to nearly $24 per hour.
The company is also deploying other AI-powered delivery tools. Its Wellspring mapping system has identified 202 million parking locations, mapped 2.8 million building entrances and cataloged 85,000 mailrooms and lockers since 2024.
Efficiency Gains Still Need to Be Proven
Amazon says its routing systems are increasingly using AI to adjust for real-world conditions. Factors can include reduced visibility after sunset, weather conditions and the additional time needed to park in busy areas.
The smart glasses also include hands-free scanning and proactive address verification. Amazon expects to continue adding functions as the devices are deployed across more routes.
For investors, the potential benefit is improved delivery efficiency at one of the most expensive stages of Amazon’s logistics network. Even small reductions in time spent locating addresses, packages or delivery points could become meaningful when repeated across a large number of deliveries.
There is still an execution caveat. Amazon has not disclosed how much the smart-glasses program will cost or quantified how much money or time each device can save, so the financial benefit remains difficult to measure.
The technology must also prove reliable and comfortable when used across different weather conditions, delivery routes and driver preferences. A wider rollout does not automatically mean the program will materially improve Amazon’s overall margins.
For Monday, the new deployment targets provide the clearest company-specific development. Amazon plans to have more than 20,000 Smart Delivery Glasses in the field by the end of 2027 as it increases its use of AI across last-mile deliveries.
