AMD stock climbed 2% on Friday after the chipmaker announced a new AI tool launch with Perplexity. The gain came as investors reacted to AMD’s expanding push into AI-powered personal computers.

The news centers on Perplexity’s Portable Computer tool. It is now available on Windows PCs that run AMD’s Ryzen AI Max chips, including the Ryzen AI Halo developer platform.

The tool lets users run AI tasks directly on their own machines. That means they can set up repeat workflows without tapping into Perplexity Computer credits for inference.

AMD has been building toward this for a few years now. Back in 2023, it launched the first AI PCs with a dedicated neural processing unit built into an x86 chip.

In 2025, the company pushed further into agentic PCs. Those systems can run AI agents locally rather than relying entirely on the cloud.

What AMD Said About the Launch

AMD executive Jack Huynh spoke about the announcement on Wednesday. He is senior vice president and general manager of the Computing and Graphics Group at AMD.

“We’re entering a new era of computing, where personal AI transforms the PC from a tool into an intelligent partner,” Huynh said. He added that the PC is becoming something that can understand, reason and act alongside its user.

Huynh said the Ryzen AI Max chips let AI models and agents run directly on the PC. He noted this gives users flexibility to work locally while still tapping into larger cloud-based reasoning when needed.

The chips themselves combine CPU and GPU performance with a large shared memory pool. That setup is what allows local AI models to run alongside everyday apps without slowing things down.

Perplexity, for its part, brings the model and agent tools to the table. Together, the two companies say this makes agentic PCs practical for everyday use rather than just a niche feature.

How Wall Street Views AMD Stock

The timing of this launch matters. Most AI activity right now happens in the cloud, but AMD is betting that more users will want to run tasks locally as demand grows.

That’s the logic behind the stock’s move on Friday. If local AI adoption picks up the way AMD expects, the company could benefit from being early to the space.

Wall Street already has a favorable view of AMD stock heading into this news. The consensus rating sits at Strong Buy, based on 30 Buy ratings and six Hold ratings over the past three months.

Analysts have set an average price target of $648.07 for AMD stock. No Sell ratings currently sit on the stock from the analysts tracked.

The Perplexity partnership adds another data point for investors watching AMD’s AI PC strategy play out. For now, the stock’s Friday gain reflects that reaction to the news.
