Apple is reportedly considering a return to the enterprise server market, combining its own chips with networking technology from Nvidia, according to a report from The Information.

The company is developing an AI server that would use two or four of its planned M8 Ultra chips, its highest-performance processors. Apple would target AI developers, businesses, and governments looking for more computing power.

Apple’s First Server Push Since 2011

This would be Apple’s first dedicated server product since it shut down its Xserve line in 2011. Xserve ran from 2002 to 2011, using chips from Intel and IBM, but never gained much traction in the market.

The new effort comes as demand for AI computing has surged. Apple’s Mac sales jumped 29% year over year to $10.3 billion in its third-quarter fiscal 2026 results, the strongest growth of any Apple product category.

AI labs and developers have reportedly been buying tens of thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio computers to support their operations. A purpose-built server could tap directly into that demand.

Nvidia’s Role in the Plan

Apple is considering Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology to connect the M8 Ultra chips. NVLink Fusion provides ready-made connectors and memory that allow custom chips to plug into Nvidia’s broader data center systems.

Some Apple staff believe Nvidia offers the best connectivity option available for the project, according to The Information.

The potential collaboration would mark a thaw in relations between the two companies. Apple and Nvidia have had a strained relationship for nearly two decades, stemming from disputes that ended with Apple cutting ties after widespread MacBook failures linked to Nvidia graphics chips.

The server project was backed by John Ternus, who was Apple’s hardware chief when the initiative started about a year ago. Ternus has since become Apple’s CEO.

Apple recently refreshed its Mac lineup with M6, M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra chips. The company said the 2-nanometer M6 chip delivers up to four times faster AI performance than previous generations.

The server product is not expected to reach the market until 2029. The project could still be canceled, or Apple could launch it without using Nvidia’s technology at all.

Apple and Nvidia did not respond to requests for comment. Reuters was unable to independently verify the report.

Apple shares rose 0.7% in morning trading on Wednesday following the report.
