Arizona’s court system has been hit by a cyberattack that court leaders believe copied personal information about many residents.
In a September 25th news release, Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer says criminal hackers or their bots targeted the state courts and that IT staff discovered the attack and took steps to stop it.
The Administrative Office of the Courts is notifying people whose personally identifiable information it believes was copied with official emails from [email protected].
One notice reviewed by The Arizona Republic told a recipient that information about them and their location was among the copied data, though courts said they had no evidence it had been shared further.
Says Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer,
“As soon as I learned about this outrageous criminal attack on Arizona’s Courts, I immediately called our team together to formulate a response. I personally spoke with the top-ranking FBI leader in the state, and I pledged our full commitment to supporting their investigation and minimizing the likelihood that the information will be used to further jeopardize Arizonans.”
Court officials have not said which courts or databases were hit or how many people may be affected, and they are withholding details that could harm the investigation.
Updates are posted at AZCourts.gov where an official alert page confirms the outreach is not a scam.
