Billionaire investor Ray Dalio has stated that he expects Bitcoin, the leading cryptocurrency, to “do relatively well,” given that governments around the world are grappling with rising debt and large fiscal deficits.
In his recent LinkedIn post, Dalio has argued that the United States and other major economies are approaching a critical stage of the long-term debt cycle.
Weakening demand for government debt, rising long-term bond yields, and monetary expansion are all signs of growing pressure.
“Most economies have similar debt and deficit problems,” Dalio wrote. The legendary investor is referring to the UK, European Union, China and Japan as well as the United States.
Gold remains his preferred hedge, but “a bit of Bitcoin” has also been included.
Dalio’s Bitcoin stance
Ray Dalio said he personally owned Bitcoin in May 2021. In 2020, he said BTC had established itself as an “interesting gold-like asset alternative.”
However, he has also repeatedly warned that governments could attempt to suppress Bitcoin if it became too successful.
In 2025, Dalio said he had some Bitcoin but significantly preferred gold during an appearance on the Master Investor podcast. Notably, he said that investor could allocate a whopping 15% of their portfolio to gold or Bitcoin as protection against currency debasement.
By November 2025, Dalio disclosed that Bitcoin had represented roughly 1% of his portfolio for years.
At the same time, he maintained that BTC would fail to become a major reserve asset due to the lack of financial privacy, the looming quantum computing threat, as well as some other concerns. Dalio reiterated those concerns in March. However, his latest comments indicate that he might view the leading cryptocurrency as a safe haven alternative.
