Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on “Economic D-Day” Against Iran

Scott Bessent stated that President Donald Trump’s military actions dismantled nearly all of Iran’s military factories and severely weakened its nuclear program. “We are now entering the endgame. “At dawn begins an economic D-Day — the single greatest financial offensive ever marshaled against an adversary,” he wrote on X.

Bessent said the objective is to “sever every economic lifeline that sustains the tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone.” He is scheduled to formally declare economic sanctions at a press conference on August 24.

This could include secondary sanctions targeting foreign banks, firms, and countries that continue doing business with Iran. As CoinGape reported earlier, Trump announced crushing economic operation ever taken against any country.”

He also warned that countries providing financial, commercial, or logistical support could face massive economic consequences. Oil prices have dropped since then to $85 per barrel.

Meanwhile, Iran also threatened that any country backing new U.S. economic sanctions will be treated as an ‘act of war.’ Iran warned that “not a single drop of oil” would leave the Strait of Hormuz or Persian Gulf if Washington’s economic pressure continues.

Bitcoin Holds Strongly Above $77K

Bitcoin price has surged more than 20% last week and currently trades around $77,150, holding strongly despite Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s economic D-Day announcement.

The US Treasury doubled debt buybacks as Scott Bessent moves to steady the bond market. Analysts expect Bitcoin price and the broader crypto market to rise further, with prediction market data showing 68% odds of Bitcoin price reaching $85,000 by December 31, 2026.

Meanwhile, Gold price extended recent gains to above $4,645 as the US Dollar Index (DXY) traded lower near 98.80 ahead of US PCE inflation data release. 10-year Treasury yields hovered around 4.71%, falling from recent peaks around 4.74%.

CoinGlass data showed mixed sentiment in crypto derivatives market. At the time of writing, the total Bitcoin futures open interest climbed 0.70% further to $55.37 billion in the last 24 hours. However, 4-hour BTC futures OI slipped 0.50%, with a 0.96% drop on CME and a 0.23% fall on Binance.

Amid these macroeconomic tensions, safe-haven assets are rallying, driving more blockchain-native investors to trade tokenized gold as an alternative exposure method.
